@emmarbee, the resolution at which testing is done matters a lot. If you take CPUs or GPUs the real strength of powerful chips becomes visible when you crank up the resolution. that's why we don't recommend core i7+GTX275 for those who use a 15" or 17" display. They are meant for fullHD stuff, be it gaming or video editing.

@desiibond - ya thats kinda true. I've seen it a lot in tomshardware's charts! Different cards will be at top at different settings and resolutions. Like some card could handle the Anti Aliasing and Filtering (probably cards with more memory) and some couldn't handle them!

Okay then, I'll look for scores of practical resolutions and try to post it here!

Why do we compare Q8400 with X4940? Its way costlier than Q8400.
Q8400 costs 8750 and X4940 costs around 10350. So obviously it beats the Q8400.

^^oh yes, you do can compare Q8400 with X4 940. Because when you pitch in mobo, Q8400+P45 will be same as X4940+780G in price.

Also, am not sure how that anandtech comparision you did came up because their full comparison between these two processors showed X4 940 having lead in almost all the benchmarks.

total benchmarks done: 21
X4 940 lead: 15
Q8400 lead: 6
and only two games were tested in this review. If they did wide range of games at good resolutions, the difference would've been much more.

Anyways, in this case, I would recommend either a Phenom II X4 or atlest Core2Quad 9450.

Q8400 is old and also Q series did not do too well and expected by Intel except the high end one's Q9450 and so! So i would suggest X4 940 any day above Q8400 unless if the OP is going for a Q9450 or Q9650. But that make the budget go up as they are still expensive in the market.

For Intel you picked P45 instead of P43 which is a lot cheaper, but then I thought its because, P45 is the one used in the BENCHMARK above mentioned. But if that was the reason, you should've picked 790FX board right? Not 780G!!! I guess it makes a lot of difference in Price???

SO again, NO COMPARISON BETWEEN Q8400 and AMD X940! Q8400 is still a worthy contender also considering the fact that the OP prefers Intel (like me).

Even I do the same thing, if the AMD outruns Intel only a SMALL difference in performance/price then I'd definitely go for Intel - won't mind spending a bit extra for INTEL logo.

And as in the case of VIDEO CARD, I've suggested the OP to go for ATI RADEON (which I don't like a bit) just because some of the models are way better in price/performance ratio.
4870 clocked at 770 (9k) is way better than GTS250 clocked at 738 (8.7K) - thats why i recommended him 4870 radeon.
But I'd still prefer the NVIDIA card - i know i'm dumb. But I like nvidia sitting inside my pc than some ATI s***!

@emarbee, the phenom 2 x4 920, 940 and 955 and whatever other x4 they have beats the q8400 easily...stick to it...

As amitash said any X4 thumps Q8400 easily! So Q8400 should be out of the question. Also about that mobo, i think P45 are a hell of a lot more expensive than even 790GX boards. There is a factor of budget also you know. I think, Biostar TA790GXB is a good board and very good performer at only 4.2K! Now that's "Value For Money"!!!

true. 790GX's price starts at 5.5k and that too it's a CF board. in case P43 is to be compared with, we have 740G which is availble for some 3k.

P43 <-> 740G
P45/G45 (Non-crossfire) <-> 780G
P45 (with CF) <-> 790FX/GX

in all three segments, there is no match for ATI's chipset.

The only thing ahead of 790FX/GX boards would be the X48 motherboards of Intel. But that's throwing your budget out of the window. They all need DDR3 (and we all know, how expensive DDR3 is with a little improvement in performance) and are SLI/CF ready. Those mobo's cost around 12K-15K. That's not VFM now, is it??? So at this point of time we can say an AMD rig is better. For Intel, lets say we have to wait for i3 and i5 to be launched, which is being postponed till Jan 2010, due to recession.
