Strange CPU Behaviour, Is Speedstep playing up or I am missing something ?

i5 3570k & MSI z77a g45 on Win7 x64

I was checking cpu-z and saw the cpu was running at 1.6Ghz which was expected as Speedstep is supposed to do that, when I switched to High Performance power mode the cpu went up to 3.4 Ghz, which again is normal and expected.
Now the fun part is, when in Balanced power mode, I tried to Install Visual Studio 2008 the cpu usage didn't go more then 5-7 % and the core speed was 1.6Ghz, the installation took forever, I finally had to cancel the installation mid way.
The same thing happened with Adobe Illustrator CS6 Installation, the core speed didn't nudge up a bit but while installing ai I started an zip function the core speed went up to 3.4Ghz.

Now the question is, are these setup/installation mechanisms not putting enough stress on the cpu, that speedstep don't see reason to up the speed ?
And where is my turbo ?

I don't know about it much but maybe it works in high performance mode. Are you able to install these apps in High Performance mode ?/

Hai,

I think if u enable Turbo only 1 or 2 cores may work at full speed.For longevity of your system don't enable any speed step and u can see this article relating to your problem.Anyways Ivy bridge core is usually hot than sandy bridge, so don't fry your chip.

I think this will answer your problem.I think Ivy Bridge is hotter than Sandybridge so dont overclock it and enabling Turbo might reduce the life of your CPU.

^^No where in that thread it is suggested that overclocking or enabling turbo boost will fry up your IB processor. IB are not that bad at overclocking even with a decent cooler like hyper 212 evo people have been able to take it upto 4.5 though that may not work for every1. That thread in no way answers OPs question. If with one application its working properly while with the other it isn't then the problem could be application specific but I have no knowledge of this particular issue or that application so don't take my words for it. Have you tried setting everything to high performance mode and then enabling speedstep manually?

Hi guys, sorry for the delay in reply, was soo soo deep in work. Anyway..

The thing is when in High Performance mode, the Installation does speedup, and everything seems to work faster, but then I still get some glitches here and there, for example, firefox(latest version) gives me such a hard time some times, but then it has its own problem with scripts and flash crashing and I have so many addons, so not sure, an another program that I am using quite extensively these days is Devc++, some days it works like charm, but on other days, it takes its time to even open up the file explorer dialog box. Photoshop works fine, it takes some time to load, maybe 10-20 secs, but somedays, it too takes too much time to open the save or open dialog box.

Not sure if its Hardware related problem or Software. I have two culprits in mind, one is Windows7 64bit, and other is bios. Once I get sometime will install my old windowsXP on a partition and see if problem persist, and maybe update bios.
One thing I am sure the problem is not application specific, since many of them pose the same problem.

did you know, you can set how much cpu is utilized in the advanced battery options???

check there and see if cpu usage is set to a low value (i have set mine to 5% usage in low power mode)

1. High performance mode always keeps the cpu at 3.4 clock speed, the balanced mode keeps it low at 1.6 and when its required it improves the clock speed of the cpu accordingly.
2. Can't am in the middle of a project, and it wasn't started by me, so I have to built upon whatever was given to me ;)

Yea, I know, that's what the settings in balanced mode are, minimum cpu speed = 5%

Yup, the problem is not that. The problem is if I keep it at the balanced mode, which is the min cpu at less then 100%, then even if there is load on cpu, the cpu speed does not increase, it keeps at that min value :(

Run CPU in balanced mode and disable speedstep.
Your problem will be solved.
If any of the following two: (balanced performance mode, speedstep enabled) is active CPU will go back to its min speed to save the power automatically.
