If you are using Microsoft office outlook 2007, it does automatically (I don't know if the other clients do automatically too. I have checked with this)

Thunderbird too automatically sets up the mail client for GMail account

I prefer to use the IMAP protocol over POP. This is coz whatever you do with POP is only local, meaning its not reflected on the server. That is suppose you delete a msg or mark it as junk then the msg still exists on the server and is NOT marked junked.

To haf proper synchronization you can use the IMAP protocol. Refer these guides:

@Infra

Eventhough I agree with you in some point, I prefer POP in areas like deleting messages etc.

For example, if you delete a message by mistake or messup with something at email client, if its POP, the copy in server will be safe. But if its IMAP, we will be in trouble isn't it ?

^^^ It'll be in Trash/Deleted Items on the server :)

And the automatic setup by Thunderbird for GMail is for POP protocol only.

I was using Thunderbird and Outlook but found that Outlook Exprees is the best.

Really Outlook Express just rocks. *gigasmilies.googlepages.com/42a.gif*gigasmilies.googlepages.com/42a.gif
