Setting up a LAN connection help needed...

i never set up a lan connection between two computers.so i need some help with this.
i have connected my laptop and desktop computer directly through lan.i find some ip address has to give to two computers.what ip should i give?
also how i could see contains of one computer through another?
help me....

give different addresses to both computers(in range 192.168.1.* )

*=1 to 254

if you just want to transfer files then you need not specify ip addresses, just the domain name should be the same.
to view the contents of the other computer you must enable sharing on drives. to do this right click on any drive and click properties, go to sharing tab and enable it. do not share all your drives, especially if you connect to internet.
