bah all will land you in law suits

No one can file a law suit for having a similar domain name. Domain names are on first come, first serve basis. If a company didn't buy that domain, it's not anyone else's fault or the person who buys it. No one has reservations over domain names.

how long are these domain names valid for ?

anyway, you expect to sell .com and .us domain names for 100$ ? Only the biggest fool will buy it.

^Thats is called appraisals.

Dude you must be kidding. Try to reg a website with MYSPACE in the dmain name and as soon as your wbsite gets a little big, U will be sued by myspace for trademark infringement. Even before the lawsuit ends the domain name will get cancelled by godaddy (if you regged there). If you want such sites to survive U need to move the site to some registar not based in US. I recommend Spanish registars. Even then google can intervene anywhere. Google wons the internet......LOL;)

NO dude, domain names is no one's property unless bought by them. It is simply based on first come, first serve basis. If you didn't bother to buy all the domain extentions your domain name is associated with, then it's simply your problem, not anyone else's. Take any global brand for example, they've registered all possible extentions for say like intel.com, intel.org, intel.xxx etc.. etc.. although all the domains will never be used. This is simply because of the fact that if someone say for example bought intel.co.in before intel did, then intel would have to pay huge amounts to the person who holds the .co.in domain as intel needs it anyways.

Domain names cannot be classified as infringing upon registered trade marks unless someone manipulates the domain names to get stolen traffic. say for eg intels.com could be infringing if they make a mirror copy of intel.com to get traffic they don't deserve, but if someone has intels.com with something on their own that in no way has anything to do with stealing the traffic, then no one can sue them..

BTW, we're talking about holding domain names and not putting up a site on those domain names. So, when ever there is a new extension up for grabs, for eg the recent .asia, try your best to buy domains of big companies, they pay big money if they want the domain. Several domain names have been sold for over $100,000.

Edit:
Domain sex.com was sold for $14 Million
creditcard.com $3Million
Business.com $7.5 million
Casino.com $5.5 million
AsSeenOnTv.com $5.1 million
Altavista.com $3.3 million
Wine.com $2.9 million
Autos.com $2.2 million
Express.com $1.8 million
Men.com $1.3 million
Wallstreet.com $1m
Rock.com $1m
Websites.com $970,000
Drugs.com $830,000

I totally agree with you, I know a person who registered one of reliance's extension (other then .com) and he sold it to the reliance guys for over Rs 1 lakh.

Not sure about other countries but there are no such rules in India for trademark infringement with domains. :)

= WRONG INFORMATION

Cyber law is complex, but still in short

If they don't do it, it doesn't mean that they can't.

not in India.
such laws are unfair.
there are other ways, like identity theft charges, to handle those trying to profit from names by giving false information.

Country doesn't matter, Registrar will terminate your ownership of domain. Ever tried to read TERMS & Conditions while buying a domain?

I was talking about domain parking and not domain squatting. Read my post carefully, it tells you clearly which way you get into trouble by having a similar domain name.;-)

This should clear out everyone's confusion.
