Dear friends,

I want to buy DELL XPS 1530 laptop in few days. presently DELL is offering only 1920x1200 CCFL display with this model. I was thinking to have 1440x900 or 1680x1050 maximum.
Please suggest whether this high resolution is suitable with 15.4" size ? Will I be able to play games having much lower resolution ?
Do NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT justify such high resolution ?

Please advice me with your valuable inputs so that I can make wise decision ?

Thanks in advance

You nuts? The laptop you mentioned supports native resolution of 1280x800 only(called WXGA), 1920x1200 is probably not possible for a laptop yet, specially with a 15.4" screen.

BTW the costliest model has 1440x900 resolution, 8600GT will suffer there.

8600GT is perfect for that resolution(1280x800), you will be able to play most games maxed out(Only Crysis @ medium but all else will run fine).

My friend, thats entirely possible! Dell's 17 inchers have offered that for quite a while now. Acer's Gemstone 2's. Asus, Sony. They do have laptops @ that resolution.
And its entirely possible for Dell to have that res in 15.4". :)

To original poster.

1920X1200 will be overkill for the hardware that the XPS has. And yes; Nvidia 8600GT can justify that resolution IF you do not need to game at that very resolution. You can game at 1440x900 and it WONT look bad/pixelated because of the pixel density of the Full HD screen @ 15.4".
With such high resolution, you can watch true 1080p HD movies on the laptop. You can use the huge area for web surfing... etc. Though yeah; you may need to increase the text size by a few notches. And expect a lower battery life with such high resolution.

But I advise you to go for 1440x900. The best balance between price and performance.

Did you read my post? The guy's getting the Dell XPS 1530 and clearly it supports 1280x800/1440x900(High-end model)

So basically the 8600MGT is O.K for 1280x800/1440x900

And Dell XPS 1730 supports 1920x1200 with 17" screen and has Dual 8700MGT to go with it @ 1,10,000/-

And the XPS 1530 with 1920x1200 costs more.

XPS 1530 with 1920x1200 cost along with T9300 2.5 GHz processor, 4 GB ram, 320 GB HDD and TV tunner cost 76647 Rs. while with 1680x1050 display it cost 73000 Rs.

I will opt for 1680x1050

By the way is it advisable to have a TV tunner card with laptop ?

DELL is providing "AVerMedia AVerTV Hybrid NanoExpress DVB-T TV Tuner" for 3315 rupees.

How does it work? can any one explain ?

I thik YOU did not read any of the posts well. tusharlad said that 1920x1200 is available for XPS 1530. and you said...
1920x1200 is probably not possible for a laptop yet, specially with a 15.4" screen.
That means 1920x1200 isnt available in any laptop; and cannot even be thought of in a 15.4" screen.
And you are WRONG. It HAS been possible in 17 inchers; and 15.4" screen CAN also have it, as I said. (Dunno about all XPS 1530 though)

tkin said:

Even my FX 5200 can drive 1920x1200 pretty easily. And I HAVE already said that one does not have to game at the full resolution. And I have also said WHY it wont look bad on the XPS 1530.

tusharlad said:

Why? He hasnt mentioned budget. And its the perfect choice If he wants a good performing laptop with full HD display for true HD videos. And I already have said this.

IronManForever said:

I said the above because GENERALLY people do not buy such high res screen in 15.4" size. And he may not be able to GAME at full resolution(which he surely can live without). Thats all I meant. Not that 8600GT is underpowered. What if someone does not need to game at full HD but wants an average size laptop for viewing Full HD? Isnt this the perfect choice?

Can you provide a link to the product page, seems I can't find any XPS 1530 with 1680x1050/1920x1200 resolution? Only 1280x800/1440x900 ones.

Please provide a link to this 15.4" screen laptop supporting Native 1920x1200 resolution.

Here is the link
*www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/notebooks?c=in&cs=indhs1&l=en&s=dhs

press customise button under XPS 1530 and new window will be pop up configuring 1530

When I put query first at that time there was only one option 1920x1200 after i brought this to their notice all other options are added again.

8600GT will die @ 1920x1200 for gaming, the max it can handle is 1440x900 for gaming. For other purposes its O.K.

P.S-Thanks for the link, this is the first time in my life I heard about 15.4" 1920x1200 display. You'll have trouble reading text a bit if you use XP.

Dude. even 1680x1050 is overkill for that GPU and 15" display.

opt for 1280x800 or 1440x900.

My suggestion : forget about XPS and get hp dv5. 9600GT based laptop costs around 65k and that would be lot better than this config with old 8600gt that will become stale in few months.

at this present time, you wouldn't want any game to run on that high a resolution (if the laptop actually does support it!)
i'm using a 17 inch hp with 1440x900 res, & i love games on it, though i do agree i need to tweek the setting a bit here n there. i think the 8600gt will be able to run you through your gaming needs though i can't possibly say what'll happen in the long run...
take desiibond's n my advice: go in for an hp dv5 laptop. they've got killer looks n deadlier hardware!

If really want to game at 1920*1200 you can get Laptops from alienware coz their laptops have deifnite hardware for that resolution....9800gt mobile for laptops !!!!!!
but only problem is they dont sell their products in india directly you will have to import from U.S.,Australia,UK,Germany<sapin,France etc
it will cost u around RS.1.25 lac onwards....by the "WE CAN GET RESOLUTION OF 1920*1200 ON 15.4' SCREEN (WUXGA).....ITS 4 UR INFORMATION "tkin"

1920x1200 on a 15.4" would suck, texts would be too small and did I mention the 8600GT will die on that Res if gaming, 9800GT is the least that should be considered.

BTW Alienware(also VoodooDNA) provides 9800GT Dual SLI as a starter.

Dear Friends,
Thanks for your openion and advices.

My Basic use of laptop is documentation ( Office 2007), CorelDraw and photoshop works. I also intend to use my machine for 3D graphic works and programming. Apart from these entertainment and Occassional gaming. Many time I run more than two softwares at a time.
I am purchasing XPS 1530 again in this year. I had purchased One in May 08, but unfortunately it has been stallen from my office exactly in 2 months. It was having 1440x900 display, T8100 proci. and the same NVIDIA 8600 256 MB GPU. I could not be able to play any game on that Laptop in just that short time.

to DESIBOND
your adcice for Hp's DV series laptop is quite reasonable as they have centrino 2 P8400 processor and 9600 GPU and cost also around 65K with some goodies too. But somewhat I have fallen in Love with XPS 1530. the Blazing crimson red colour and overall stunning look is very alluring. and also DELL's service is much better as I experienced in those 2 months.

Still I have not finalised the resolution of the screen but my mind says that this time I should go with 1680x1050 as it may give better multimedia experience.
I have selected T 9300 CPU having 2.5 GHZ 6 MB cache 800MHz FSB. 4 GB DDR 2 Ram
I also intend to have a TV tuner card- Dell is providing AVER MEDIA HYBRID card for 3215 rs.

Please Pore in your expert advices and openion regarding my configuration. your openions are always helpful and I am still open minded to alter my configuration.

BTW my config. has cross 70K mark.
