Recommendation for a wifi router

Have 2 laptops & a desktop in different rooms & I want to set up a wireless network to transfer files between them.

I also have a BSNL dataone connection with a UT-300R2U modem currently connected to the desktop. I would also like to access this internet connection from all three.

Would I be better-off buying a wifi router & connecting it to the modem or buying a ADSL2 wifi router? Also it should have good signal strength to get through the walls.

Rooms are 5m x 4m approx, walls are 2ft thick but brick & mortar, not concrete. One room is on an upper floor, wood plank floor. Budget is 2k.
