RAM Speed

Hi can anyone tell me if I install a 256 MB 266MHz RAM Module // to a 128 MB 133MHz Module Will there be any problems due to speed differences and what's with the RAM Latency etc

i dont think there will be any problems but the 256 mb module will also work at 133 mhz. rite guyz ? btw which mobo are u using ? check its manual and stuff also.

133 mhz ddr runs at 266 so it should work fine with ur 256 module

According to me it will not work. I dont think you can pair ram of two different sizes. Bus speeds, latencies can be different but not the configuration.

Latency is basically the timmings of the ram. This is the time which the ram will take at different speeds to preform read/write tasks.

Onl thing you cannot do is combine a DDR RAM with a SDRAM or a DDR2 RAM (altho I think I have seen a mobo which supports both DDR and DDR2 I think).

I am agreed with Icecoolz. But one doubt I have, for two ram with different speeds, at which speed will the system run actually?

the RAM will run at the lower speeds of the two.

I think asus and msi both make those mobo's. I know theoretically it is said that they work. But there are crashes and problems in practical usage. Then again if you are lucky there might be none. So lets all just be Lucky!!

icecoolz and rohanbee , Athlons does not have support for DDR 2 as of now , rumors says that they are directly going to XDR or DDR3 which is alredy posted here - *www.thinkdigit.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20997
Also u need more pins on the processor to support DDR2 .

hmm...then I must have seen an intel board which supports both....oh well DD3 is the future neways. But right now I am happy with my PC

SDRAM and DDR do not... repeat do not work 2gether even if the board has slots for both... you can use either...typical CAS latencies at max speed for common RAM types is 3 for SDRAM and 2.5 for DDR, 4 for DDR2. those supporting lower latencies are usually boldly advertised as "high speed" RAM. hynix chips...most common...DDR are 2.5 at max speed and 2 for the next lowest. U can use most coomon bm progs lyk sandra to find out supported speeds/latencies. You have to use identical ram types only if you are using dual channel config

DDR3 i dont think intel has any plans yet. DDR2 also still in its infancy yet wonder when ddr3 will actually come ahead. Already seeing this type of memory in graphics cards

the point is.....
you can always install two sticks of diff memory size like 128mb \and 256 mb

but they should be at same speed....or problem will definately arise
i had a same problem....

No that is not correct. SPeeds can vary that will lead to the mobo running the ram at the speed of the slower one.
