Which would give better perfomance for my PC?

(a) 512MBX2 (DDR400)
(b) (a) + 256MB (DDR266)

??
there is a fair chance that your computer might get unstable if u use mixed speed RAM. i used a 256MB (DDR266) with 128 MB (DDR 400) and my computer got the blue error screen

option (b) might degrade the performance...if u have the ram modules why dont u try it out n let us know the difference ??

yea.thts the problem...im nt able to make out da difference... but don think there wud be much of a perfomance gain with added 256mb of ram...

Depends on what ur doing ... lets put it this way ->

For general computing , like listening to music , movies , burning and other simple operations .. the more the better .. here the memory bandwidth , latency will hardly make a noticeable difference ..

For office works , the more the better too ..

For 3d apps , like max, maya or Gaming ... or anything involves editing on a large scale , the mem. bandwidth plays a big role ... then ddr400 will definitely be slightly better ..

256 MB against 1GB(400) is too small an increase to make any difference in size. It will degrade performance.

It would be a different issue if it was 512*2(400) + 512(266), cause then there would be a substantial increase in memory size....Option (a) it is...
