Hey Guys,

I have a query. I came across various speaker specs like 2.0, 2.1, 5.1 etc.

What is the meaning of these?

What is the difference between 2.1 and 5.1?

Thanks and Regards,
Amit Kale.

Refers to the use of audio channels plus a subwoofer channel in speaker systems.

X.Y means X audio channel & Y subwoofer channel.

See deatil:

2.0 --> 2 audio channel and no subwoofer channel.

2.1 --> 2 audio channel & 1 subwoofer channel.

5.1 --> 1 front central channel
------> 1 front left & 1 front right
------> 1 surround left & 1 surround right
------> 1 subwoofer channel

6.1 --> 1 central channel & 1 rear central
------> 1 front left & 1 front right
------> 1 surround left & 1 surround right
------> 1 subwoofer channel

7.1 --> 1 front central channel
------> 1 front left & 1 front right
------> 1 rare left & 1 rare right
------> 1 surround left & 1 surround right
------> 1 subwoofer channel

Numerous audio encoding technologies support 5.1 channel, including Dolby Surround, Dolby Digital and DTS.

Note: All 5.1 channel speaker system can't play Dolbydigital or DTS. For that speaker system should have Digital amplifier with Dolby & dts decoder facilities. Read the speaker system specification carefully.

Thanks for the info. But what is the difference between the sound quality of 2.1 and 5.1?

I was suggested to buy Altec Lancing 2.1. But I saw that 5.1 version also is available and price difference is not huge.

Please suggest!

Regards,
Amit Kale.
