Problem with sound in Ubuntu 11.10

Broken In
I had installed Ubuntu 11.10 some weeks ago, but the audio was of very poor quality.
I googled the problem and installed "Restricted drivers" for it by the following command:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
But still the sound isn't good.
However, It sounds OK when I reduce the volume from the media player (keeping it at 25% - 35%) and manually increase my speaker volume, but that isn't right, I mean that's not what I used to do in Win XP, it worked fine on 100% volume there.
So I have to reduce the volume everytime I open something, which is cumbersome. :-(
It's ruining my linux experience and only due to this reason, I usually boot into XP rather than Ubuntu.

Another query, how to view the sent and received data details when you're connected to net. Some of us don't have unlimited plans, so we have to keep a track of the usage. It's stupid to sign-in into ISP's website everytime to view usage details.
