Check your CD drive.
Most antique Systems get stuck at the black screen if there is a CD in the drive.

If no CD is there in your drive, then try defragmenting your computer.
See this link for info about defragmenting

Try entering into Safe Mode...
then remove all the unwanted entries from the startup. (Run ->msconfig)

It can be also due to corrupt registry. go to this link for that....

^^ It doesn't work on an OEM system. The first thing to do is to try Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking. If it doesn't work, use a Boot CD and check for problems in the HDD. If all else fails it could be the end.
