Optical in/out connection query

Have a few queries regarding an optical connection from a PC to a Hi-Fi system. Here are they:

1) Does an optical connection carry 5.1 signal?

2) Is an optical conection have the sound processed by the on-board sound card or the Receiver (Hifi in my case)

Am I right in assuming that the optical connection will by pass the onboard sound card and the processing will be done by the Hifi system.
In such case the sound quality will be much better (and not limited by the quality of on-board soundcard -REALTEK- )

Why all this?
Just got my 10year old Hi-Fi shifted to my room. Only the RCA in works for now. Optical needs to be checked if still working.
Thought of experimenting with it since it is the only 5.1 in my house and will be for a long time.
It has an optical in, RCA in and 3.5mm in (for karaoke I guess).

My PC has a optical out on the motherboard and 5.1 in built (realtek{?})

So in short; Will I get better sound in my Hi-Fi though the optical connection?

Also can someone tell me the price of a decent optical cable.

Thanks

:)
