NOKIA handset + EDGDE enabled of highest class...in India!!!

Hi mobile geeks (as well as computer geeks)...

I am planning to purchase a NOKIA handset very soon may be in next 4-5 days...

WHAT I WANT:

a. MOST IMPORATNT MUST FEATURE:

The nokia handset must be EDGE enabled (not merely GPRS) and that too of highest class (those who r aware even EDGE and GPRS are of various classes like 3,4, 10 etc etc) available in India.

The above is the most important feature required and may be the only feature required apart from being bluettoth enabled.

b. Preferably (second requirement: imporatnt but not MUST):

bluetooth enabled.

MISCELLANEOUS:

All other features whether they r there or not does not matter to me in any way...if they r there good...if not no regrets....

As u must have understood I am planning to use internet access on computer through mobile office airtel through Nokia EDGE handset.
Please advice considering that two features

a. EDGE of highest class in India...AND
b. Bluetooth

must be present and COST should be minimum for above two features.

Rest features do not matter at all.

But yes if by spending more say rs 1000 or say rs 2000; i can get substantial other features than what i want...then please advise that also...

My budget is quite quite flexible but want something around rs 8000 - 10000 maximum (although its flexible and can be increased)...

---------------

Also which bluetooth dongle and bluetooth enabled headset is best...???? for the headset advised above by you..??????????

If you want to add something or suggest otherwise or for that matter anything please feel free to do so; so that informed decision making is possible.

Thanks as always for valuable insights and help.

Best regards

** Nokia 3220 has only EDGE and no BT it costs 8k-8.5k, maybe even less.

** Nokia 6230 has both EDGe and BT and costs 1.5k-12k , but it's no longer available and manufactured by Nokia.

** Even Nokia 6820 has BT and EDGe for 8k. It's no longer manufactured by Nokia.

** Nokia 3230 has EDGe and BT and costs 15k-15.5k.

Check the reviews of the three phones here:

@sincereheart:
JUst check what class they have at Nokia website or at gsmarena.

And that no longer manufactured means that you need to buy a grey market piece or second hand or a old handset.

Yeah , I forgot 6021 nokia , check that also, it dont have a cam.. but a good mob and a new one.

Blackberry for business application. Also remember that we have to pay rs. 1.2k for Airtel for using it's features and connectivity things. Blackberry is a good phone, I myself have used it and it's very good for emails and browsing. Last time when I asked it was rs. 22k with Airtel, how much is it now?

Whereas 6230i is a multimedia phone :D

ya wcdma can go even more than 384 kbps...unlike its name...wcdma actually works on gsm..and is not an extension of gprs which edge is...wcdma is being touted as the mobile broadband offering for gsm...but none of the networks in india support cdma and considering the pace by which EDGE is being accepted ..i think it may take more than two-three years before it actually gets implemented...

Max speed you can get with EDGE is 236.8kbps and phones such as the 6230 and 6230i support that speed. Both have GPRS/EDGE class 10 but since the 6230i has replaced the 6230, go for the 6230i. Neither phone has 3G so you cannot get the 384kbps speed. Besides, very few operators the world over offer 3G, let alone in India. Remember, EDGE is still 2g [or 2.5G] and not 3G.

3220 has a high class EDGE but alas the service providers dont give that much bandwidth!
The phone has GPRS at 32-48 kbps but EDGE at 178 Kbps. But service providers give a dialup bandwidth say max. = 36 kbps !

yeah, & the lucky guys are those in Japan & South Korea where almost everyone is on 3G, all with NTT DoCoMo pushing for 3G everywhere!! ;) What I envy more of them is that they have breakneck broadband speeds, the avg speeds in S.Korea is above 2Mbps, they have faster connections than the US itself!!

Also, I read somewhere that BSNL is testing out 3G, so it won't be long before we get our 3G network!! ;)

Good thing for Indian Cellphone user

Indian Cos. are running around Telcom Regulatary Authority Of India(TRAI) ... for 3G network ..

And There was a unconfirmed news in the Economic Times
that TRAI has issued the license to few including AirTel.

So, Guys we can expect 3G in Delhi soon!

Post any devlopment you come across related to this.

I'd reserve judgement. The companies are sure gonna milk people for 3G, like they did with GPRS in the beginning, only now you can see GPRS rates coming down.

I doubt it, as far as I know, the licenses are granted only after the companies successfully demonstrate their ability to operate the technology in question. So far as I know, only BSNL got the go-ahead, & that too only for testing & not for launching the service!!

Instead of 3G, I'd rather have ulimited use Internet connections in excess of 2Mbps, as I use mobile only for making calls & sending Text!! ;)

India : The GSM Association (GSMA) today encouraged the Indian Government to maintain its alignment with the global community and protect the International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) recommended IMT2000 core band for 3G services.

Inset is GSMA Chairman Craig Ehrlich quoted below.

The GSMA urged the country’s telecoms regulator to veto a proposal that would effectively isolate India from the global mobile market, a risk that would undermine the current growth and development of the country’s telecommunications industry and restrict the ability of mobile users to roam internationally.

“In identifying the core 3G spectrum band back in 1992, the ITU – the United Nation’s telecommunications agency – realised the importance of long term stability in spectrum policy. Through economies of scale, globally harmonised spectrum will make a major contribution to connecting the unconnected. This proposal is a direct attack on all that the ITU has achieved in this regard, said Ehrlich.

The Indian regulator is currently considering a proposal to release spectrum at 1900 MHz that not only favours specific technologies, but also directly overlaps and clashes with the ITU band, reserved globally for 3G services. The 1900 MHz band is often referred to as the “US PCS band.

Speaking at the 3GSM World Congress Asia, GSMA Chairman Craig Ehrlich said: “If the US PCS band is allocated in India, then the Indian people will be denied the benefit of unrestricted access to global roaming in the 3G world and the dynamic Indian IT and telecommunications industries will suffer.

“This proposal is a short term fix that could do untold long-term harm to the country and its development of advanced third generation services. India is one of the success stories of the wireless world and this proposal is at odds with the country’s strategic growth on the global stage, he added.

TRAI, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India, has proposed releasing spectrum in the “PCS band (1850-1910 MHz paired with 1930-1990 MHz) to operators of second-generation mobile services. However, the upper band is part of the ITU-defined core radio spectrum for 3G services and has been allocated as such in the vast majority of countries, worldwide.

With just 7.74 telephone connections (fixed and mobile) per hundred inhabitants, mobile is central to India’s drive to improve access to telecommunications. This year, India’s GSM operators have connected six million new users - 80% of all new mobile subscribers and 55% of all new telephone connections.

The Association also pointed out that 90 percent of the world’s mobile operators that have been awarded licences to deploy 3G services, have been granted IMT2000 core band spectrum on a technology neutral basis.

Many GSM operators in other countries are now upgrading their networks with 3GSM, which combines significantly increased capacity for conventional voice calls with high speed data and multimedia services. Fifty operators have already launched 3GSM commercially and at least 70 networks are expected to be in service by the year-end.

With this momentum, 3GSM is beginning to replicate the success of GSM, which currently serves more than 1.1 billion customers across some 208 countries and territories. Growing economies of scale are driving down the cost of 3GSM infrastructure and handsets making this highly efficient technology an increasingly attractive option to sustain India’s booming mobile market.

As the global trade association representing more than 660 second and third generation mobile operators, the GSMA has recently established a Spectrum Management Group to monitor spectrum policy issues worldwide, facilitate the exchange of this knowledge among its members and provide input to national, regional and international regulatory and standards bodies.
