Nokia 6682 problems !!

recently my brother brought me a Nokia 6682 frommte US. unfortunately it doesnt work on either Hutch nor Bsnl etc. Its a GSM enabled phone. However it works only on Airtel.??
i went to te Trivandrum Nokia authorised centre & they too told that a SPECIAL SOFTWARE !! need to be installed in the mobile , but there s no Guarntee that it will work or else It may stop During the Process !!! thats the phone might become dead !! the cost is 1000 Rs.
I am not worried regarding their service charge, but worried that suppose if something happens in between , the CEll will become a USelss one..
They also said that the this Particular Model seems to support DUAL BANd networks & It Takes AITrel SIgnals as the netwrok is Dual band Supported..t seems no other network apart from Airtel supports Dual band in India..

So is this true.?
I am moving to Chennai next week & have been looking for a Edge enabled phone & ths model supports it,gladly.But seems I need to depend upon Airtel Network for that.!!??
SO is there something for me to help me out of the situation..??
and what are the Airtel Chennai GPRS Rates..??I I have herad of something called "airtel data card".? How reliable is tat.? how are their connection speeds

i think ur fone is service provider locked.

Airtel works on 1800 MHz while others probably work on 900 MHz. 6682 supports 850 MHz (its specially designed for the American market which uses this band) instead of 900 MHz which 6680/1 uses. Thats why it only works with Airtel and not with other service providers.
