no sound on laptop using suse 10.1 linux

hey yesterday i have installed linux on my lenovo laptop model no 0689-3ma. i have also winxp installed on it. the problem is that i do not hear any sound from my speakers when i m using linux although it works absolutely fine in winxp.
media player can play the audio file but with no sound.
my sound card is of sound max digital integrated digital hd audio.

i am new to linux. so i dont know much about it.

please help me.

hey thanks for the link. ill try those suggestions and let u know.

hey no sound yet... :-(
i logged in as a root user and ran alsamixer from terminal. no option is mute and volume is set to max
still no sound.
please help

my card is HDA intel
chip: analog devices AD1986A

Then give the output of lspci. And also try running alsaconf as root
Don't login as root. Just use su command from the terminal to get root access in the terminal.

and now after running alsaconf , the audio files are not even running in media players like before. no error msg yet.

this sound problem is causing a lot of headache. i ll be very grateful if someone solve this for me.

ok after restarting the system, audio files can be played with no sound whatsoever

Are you trying to play MP3 files or some other audio files?
Give us the output of lsmod command as well.

Opensuse can not play MP3 by default. Try playing some wav file to see if audio is working or not. First do a "locate wav" (without quotes). You will get a long file list with lots of wav files. Just play any one of them using aplay command. Like "aplay xyz.wav" (without quotes again) and see if you get any audio output.

few mins back i downloaded a sound driver from realtek site and installed it. guess what??? i got the sound back. audio output is working perfectly. i still dont know the reason.how can realtek driver work on a sound card of other company?

one more query............
the sound i am getting is a bit scratchy type like u know what we get while listening to FM and antenna is not properly positioned.(proper tuning of frequency is not done)
hope i am clear.

can anybody work on this unique problem.
