new hardrive

hi guys
i have a gigabyte motherboard with only one ide port which is connected to HDD and ODD.Now I want to buy a new hardrive of sata interface.My board has 4 sata ports.can i use the old ide hard drive with the new one and how can i make the master slave arrangement.
Now the hard drive is master and dvd drive is slave so if i install new hardware is there any changes to be made to the connection?

yes you can use both HDDs. Master slave is only for IDE drives. So even if u add a new SATA hard disk the previous master slave setting will be intact. But i think u have to make some changes to bios to be able to boot from old HDD.
