Network problem: Pls help!

Hi all..

I didn't know whether to put this in here or in the hardware section but I put it here because I feel it's a software problem..


I have a LAN set up on the 2 computers in my room.. Let's call them Comp A and Comp B. It used to work like a charm and I was perfectly happy with the LAN gaming and file transfers.
A while ago I installed System Mechanic on Comp A, and ran some optimisations. Since then, I have never been able to access Comp A from Comp B for file transfer. Comp A can access all files of Comp B. Gaming is also possible.

The only problem is this: Comp B cannot access Comp A at all. The error message is this: "Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact your administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."

I am on administrator on both computers.

I've uninstalled Sys Mechanic, but it doesn't help. I believe it's messed with some policies. I know it's the culprit alright, since another friend also has the same problem.
I've written to iolo.com but they aren't helping.

Please help me restore my LAN to working condition, guys.. You're my only hope now.

just run "set up a small office or home network' on both the comps..select enable file and printer sharing in the end of the wizzard.
i think the prob would be solved.
i not then i'll give u ip and dns settings u can try them as alternative.

As manmay suggested the issue should be resolved. Another approach wud be uninstalling and reinstalling file and print sharing from add/remove/windows programe. Do let us know.

Your suggestion pertains to the Windows Firewall setings and they have made no difference..

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling everything related to networking in Windows components, but the problem persists. Now Comp 2 has also started hanging when it tries to access Comp 1.


Please help, anyone.. I badly need this fixed..

no i dont refer to the windows inbuilt firewall settings.
and more over it is better to switch off the firewall and install a better one like avast (for me) or better zonealarm....

what i'm trying to convey to u is that just run the set up a small office or home network wizard, that's it.

try putting the ip of the first machine to 172.168.0.1 adn the other 172.168.0.2
the gateway and dns same in both....and try pinging the other comp.
what does it show....?

and no trouble man....troubleshooting is fun....

Like I said, pinging is all fine.. Both comps ping each other perfectly.. Even game playing is perfect.. The only thing wrong is file access from Comp 2 to Comp 1, nothing else. Comp 1 accesses all shared forlders of Comp 2.

What I said was that running the small home & office network only alters the settings of the Windows firewall. If you select 'turn off file sharing' at the end, Windows Firewall will be block filesharing, and vice versa.

And your suggestion about the IP address didn't do me any good, as I expected.. I am telling you, everything works perfectly except file access from Comp 2 to Comp 1. Comp 1 can access Comp 2 and both comps can ping each other. If there was any problem with the IPs, the two comps would not have connected at all.. So what you said about the IPs does not make any sense.

Please, someone help me.

1st make sure no virus is present or no firewall in active...

Go to network connection on both system... u should see a connection name Local Area Connection now right click on that then go to Properties then in advance tab go to TCP/IP setings... there manually set the IP in both system,

System 1
(the system that/if has internet getway) as server
IP 192.168.1.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 default getway 192.168.1.1

System 2
IP 192.168.1.xx subnet mask 255.255.255.0 default getway 192.168.1.1

now turn the file share on & share the HDD & CDD & FDD....

look i'm teling u...the same thing happened with me....
both comps can ping each other and one of the com can access the shared files of the other one but not vice versa.

ok listen try this ips on the two comps

first of all just note down your present ips of both the comps and apply this ips to the 2 comps..

comp 1

Ip add : 20.20.20.80
Subnet mask : 255.255.254.0
Default gateway : 20.20.20.1

Preferred dns server : 202.56.230.5
Alt dns server : 202.56.250.5

comp 2

Ip add : 20.20.20.75
Subnet mask : 255.255.254.0
Default gateway : 20.20.20.1

Preferred dns server : 202.56.230.5
Alt dns server : 202.56.250.5

if this dosent work then i'm sry for giving u this trouble because this also worked for me once...

ne way put your previous settings

if u have some file that u need to transfer in urgency...then u can do file transfer using yahoo messenger....but the file size limit per file is 100 mb
but this generally works. and the file transfer speed is almost same is lan...becoz here a point 2 point connection is made.bet the 2 comps.

there are various other softwares that u can try (only if u r in real immergency)

i have nothing else to say...

Thanks for the reply again, I will try it out and let you know.

Currently I am transferring files from Comp1 to Comp2 in the following manner:
- Create a folder in Comp2 that is shared, and is given ful access on the network.
- Copy files from Comp1 into Comp2, from Comp1.
