need an audio converter for converting real audio to mp3

hi,
i have a big database of real audio files and i would like to know how i can convert them to mp3 to play on my player.also the songs were encoded with very low bitrate.will increasing it while converting to mp3 make any great change?the above software preferably should be free but even a 30 day trials
