Hi!

I'm a Bio-chemical Engineering Student, currently pursuing my Phd from Mumbai & I'm in need for a desktop that can not only help me in my online research and also keep me entertained, and I can surely use your help & advice in this regard!

1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')

Ans: Multiple Open tabs in browser(atleast 80 odd tabs at any given point in time, per browser-Firefox/Chrome/ie) while playing music/hd movies(VLC player) in the background and also enabling me to continue online downloads while working on large excel files(MS Office Suite 2010) and enabling me to copy/paste & prepare/edit Photoshop documents(Adobe Photoshop CS 5.1) for my final submission, without laggin or freezing(something that my hp dv6 i3 laptop did a lot before dying on me :( ). I also intend to use Skype to keep intouch with my brother(who is settled abroad) from time to time.

I'm not a gamer & don't intend to play any games on it... May be, if I do find the time, I may play my favorite flight simulator game on it, but gaming is not going to be a daily affair.

PS: I will be using the desktop in a non-airconditioned girls hostel for a few months before I move into my own apartment & it get's pretty stuffy and lacks proper ventilation.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans:30,000 INR with an extension of Rs 5,000-7,000/- more if necessary. I could get more from my bro during Raksha Bhandan but I would have to wait till August in that case!

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans:As per my usage requirement, I don't think I may need to overclock the desktop, but I'm guessing as a novice and I would appreciate your advise in this regard.

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans:I intend to use Windows Home Premium 64 bit & I'm planning to buy an original version of the software, if there is room left for the same in my budget, after having purchased a decent monitor.

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: 1TB for starters but I need alot of storage and the cabinet of choice need to have enough space for expansion and should be able to accommodate more drives(the more the better!) in the near future.

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.

Ans: Yes-Atleast 20 inches(glossy, not matte) LCD would do and anything better than the standard 1024 × 768 would be great! I'll be spending alot of time starring at the monitor for my studies (and some entertainment, to help me survive the next 4 years!). My hp dv6 laptop which I used till date had a standard resolution but a brightview screen which I found very comfortable to use, but after it's MB got fried last month, I had to work out of my university's computer lab & the samsung monitors there hurt my eyes-I can't seem to work for long hours on those screens. So, anything that doesn't hurt my eyes would be fine(again, looking for help & advice from forum members).. I've been told that AOC/Viewsonic make good screens.

PS: Although I'll be currently using one monitor with my system, I would like to have the option to be able to use 2 monitors in the near future(in landscape) on the same system in the very near future.

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: I don't think I would be buying a graphics card, since I don't intend to game & I feel that the discreet/in built graphics card would serve my current needs.

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: April 15th-25th, 2012

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: Never. This is my first.

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: I'm currently settled in Mumbai & yes, I can buy it locally or online or both if required. I would be grateful if you could recommend places in Mumbai-Lamington Road or others where I can get genuine products from distributors and avoid import/dubious makes of the same brand.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: Well, in addition to what I've mentioned above, I need at least one USB 3 ports on the MB.

Well,A special thanks to the team @ thinkdigit for this wonderful platform & to all the contributors, especially The Sorcerer & ico for their wonderful self-explanatory guides for newbies like me!

Well, after researching the forums, I've come up with a wild guess on what would suit my purpose but need advice whether the following would live up to my expectations and if there are any hardware conflicts etc to look out for.

Processor: Trying to choose between Intel i3-540 vs i3-2100 & AMD A6-3650(I'm okay with both-Intel or AMD, which ever serves my purpose the best...

Motherboard:Will Intel DH67VR LGA 1155 serve my purpose? Or do i need to opt for Intel DH67CL B3 LGA 1155 or Intel DH67GD B3 LGA 1155 ... I'm still trying to still understand the difference.

As far as MB's for the AMD A6-3650 is concerned, I can't find any that will support a dual monitor in the future...Do i need a discrete graphics card for the same? Please help!

Memory/Ram: 2X4GB Corsair Vengance

Harddrives: Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM

I was also thinking about installing a lower capacity SSD drive say 60GB for Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit for load time benefits-Do you think it will benefit and is feasible in my budget?

DVD Burners: Anyone that lasts longer..the costs almost seems the same for all, be it Sony, LG, HP or Asus- Which ever lasts longer and has a good after-sales warranty coverage in Mumbai.

PSU:
CORSAIR Builder Series CX500 V2 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS Certified A-Hope this is not overkill!

What do you think? Will this able to bear the demands placed on the workstation as above?

Cabinets: Tons of choices but don't know which one to choose... Need one with a good airflow and since I plan to keep on adding to my harddrives inside, as & when required, a good space for internal harddrives with equally good air flow would be good..

Thinking about the following:

Corsair Carbide Series 400R Graphite grey and black Steel ATX Mid Tower /Nzxt Tempest Evo/

I would be extremely grateful if you could please share your thoughts and views on the above.

Thanks a lot!

Nelly :)

Thank you for responding... I certainly appreciate your advise & help.. Just need a few clarifications...

1. According to the Gigabyte website(link), this MB does not have a USB 3 port. I need atleast one USB 3 port.

2. Will Gigabyte GA-A55M-S2V support dual monitors in case I need to connect them on the same MB in the near future?

3. With regards to the Nzxt Elite 210, do you think it will be able to provide enough ventilation in a stuffy, badly ventilated room? I ask this as after reading the review about the same here, seems that the lack of the front internal fans does take a toll on the internal temperatures when the system is on load, considering that I'm intending to use the system continuously and would hardly be shutting it down...

4. Would Corsair Builder Series™ CX500 V2 — 80 PLUS® Certified Power be more apt for my usage, compared to the Corsair CX430V2-I guess what I'm asking is that will the 80 PLUS certification help in keeping the CPU running around the clock without having to worry about overheating & crashes?

Thanks :)

1. Go with my suggestion.

2. Nope.

3. Yes.

4. CX430 has 80 plus certification too and its more than enough for your needs, you can also add a powerful GPU like the HD6850 if you want later.

1. You can go for ASUS F1A75-M LE for USB 3.0. It does have an Internal USB 3.0 header too.

3. The Source 210 Elite is a highly recommended cabinet. It comes with 2 fans, one at top and other at rear. You can move the one at top to the front as intake. Or you can buy CM fans @ 250. The cabinet has front USB 3.0 port too.

4. Corsair CX430V2 has 80+ Bronze certification. It is more than enough for your needs.

BTW you can consider this combination too :-

Core i5 2320 - 10400
Intel DH67CL - 5620
2 x G.Skill Value 4GB - 2300

Retired Forum Mod
going with i5 2320 is better as you won't game. later add a cheap graphics card if need arises. moreover AMD A series is for mainly multimedia + gaming. hence processor is weak.

Thank you for all for helping me out with my dilemma! Can you please recommend dealers in South Mumbai that one can trust-My friends have scared me about dealers providing duplicate products that have the seals just like the original, especially at Lamington Road.

I stopped by there this evening to check out prices & the two shops I inquired, one showed me the MB in a separate box & they quoted a price of 16500/- with the processor & the second shop had the MB in a dark transparent cover with the seal and they quoted the price with the processor @ 15950/-. I think i can get an i5-2500 with that price, isn't it?? On inquiring why did it not come in the sealed box, the dealer across the counter mentioned that they buy the MB's in bulk and hence they don't have a box for the same. Is that true?

I'm pretty surprised at the price difference I'm getting in reality and I don't want to be stuck with a duplicate product of the same make whilst paying an original price... Please help!
