Graphics card memory's got nothing to do with your mobo's RAM. Both have no relation at all. Get the 5450. ;)

PS: Your PSU is not good, but it will be able to drive your system. If possible get a better SMPS like Corsair CX430 V2 or FSP Saga II 500W.

Skud !
Thanks for your reply.
I was not aware that one can use DDR3 Graphic card when the mother board Ram is DDR2 Ram.
I searched about my PSU Fronttech JIL-2412.It looks like 500w. Agreed-By todays standards this is junk. The system is 4years old atleast I think.(not used for few years as I was out of station)
But since Iam not buying even medium end graphic card for playing games and buying a entry level card with dual output for charting/extended screen real estate,I will use the existing psu and see any problem arises.
Iam attaching the specs picture of my desktop.

1GB DDR3 ATI 5450 below Rs 2000 is indeed attractive.

I have also found out one slot motherboard RAM is vacant. So I can insert one stick 2 GB DDR2 Ram also.My motherboard+win7 ultimate can use 4 GB right?
Iam also looking at NVIDIA GEFORCE 8400GS 1GB DDR3 WITH HDMI (PALIT)@ rs 2050.
I have not compared ATI 5450 Vs Nvidia 8400 GS. you say 5450 is better.
8400gS is available in 512mb DDR2 version also.

nvidia 8400gs | eBay

So should I play safe and stick to 512 mb DDr2 graphic card or go for DDR3 (eiether ATI 5450 1GBDDR3 or Nvidia 8400GS 1 GB DDR3- prices approximately in the same ball park)
My motherboard -I assume has 1 PCI exp slot.so should handle 2.0 type GPU?
Enclosing the horoscope of my pc.! Kindly go thro it and cure my ignorance!

1) If you have a 64-bit OS, then you can obviously use 4gb RAM.

2) Your current RAM is DDR2 800 CL5. You need a matching RAM to pair them. Otherwise, they will just match to the slowest spec. In some cases, there might be some incompatibility.

3) Get the 5450 eyes closed. Your PCI-e slot will handle it.

Thanks a lot once again.
Refer another 2Gb DDR2 Ram stick- even though DDR2 is expensive than DDr3, I have to go with another DDr2 only for the reason you mentioned.
2 GB ddr2 Ram stick( Rs 1200?) once I instal win7 ultimate sp1 64 bit ( I do have ). Instead of erasing /re writing the existing version, I might instal in 64 bit version in the other partition- D or E drive-possible 2 right?

I just checked this in google search..you are very much right about ATI5450 vs nvidia8400 GS.
GeForce 8400 GS 512MB vs Radeon HD 5450 – Performance Comparison Benchmarks @ Hardware Compare

so ATI 5450 -decided.

if you install win7 x64 on other partition then the 32 bit version will remain intact and you can use both of them.

Also after getting the gfx card don't forget to install the latest drivers ;-)
