expertno1, what achacko tried to say, i think, was that no voice chat uses wav format for communication. And yahoo certainly does not use wave format.
They use a compressed wave format called TrueSpeech. It can send data at as low as 1KBps.

And yes, AFAIK skype client has the best voice quality to size ratio.

But then Yahoo chat should be smooth on 28.8 KBps modem. But still i don get it smoothly. What to do???? Which ver of skype supports Windows 98????

No, skype doesn't have a win 98 version. It's only for win 2k or xp. But for dial-up, yahoo/msn and skype all sound the same. I guess atleast 128kbps is good for voip.

Regarding yahoo, I don't know, but I guess factors like codec optimization, protocol optimization, etc play a role in bandwidth utilization by voip clients. Since skype uses p2p and latest codecs, they have low latency and very good clarity. Infact, it transmits in wider frequency than landline telephone.
