Old dog New Tricks? CPU-GPU

Can we teach an old dog new tricks?

Academic Question.
Can we pair an Old Processer with a newer GPU

Current config:
Pentium D 2.8 Ghz processor
P5KPL-AM/PS Mobo ,Intel G31 Chipset ,Socket 775(ASUS - Motherboards- ASUS P5KPL-AM/PS)
4 GB DDR2 RAM

If i put a GPU say an entry level
ATI 5xxx/6xxx card DDR3/DDR5 GPU
say a ATI Radeon HD 6670 (Sapphire HD 6670 Ultimate review | from TechRadar's expert reviews of Graphics cards)

Will the card be able to give its max output or will the CPU be a bottleneck in gaming performance??

If u guys find any articles relating to the topic , Please post.

Pentium D is one hell of a crap processor IMO. I've got two other RiG's , one running on Pentium D and other on 1st generation Athlon and I felt the latter's performance better.

I don't think it'll bottleneck the HD6670 by a considerable amount but I still suggest that you updrage to G620 with a cheap H61 board and DDR3 RAM for better performance.
