Right off the assembly line
We all know abt the calamity caused by the virus programs for our PCs and now it has deep rooted into the mobile computing.
basically all type virus programs needs a platform to run.the devices which work on specific platforms are called smart phones.
the most common smart phone platforms affected by virus programs are,
  • 1.symbian
    2.windows mobile
    3.java platform
    4.palm os
A survey by MNC says that 93% of the symbian phones are affected by viruses,3% of wm devices & the rest is on other platforms.
AN INTERESTING HISTORY:
once a company for mobile phone games released a patch on their "MOSQUITO game",there starts the era of mobile viruses.
it made the devices to constantly run out of power.
so i like to give the common mobile viruses on different platforms.
SYMBIAN VIRUSES:
the crisis for virus starts when a programmer created the cabir virus.the first variant doesn't do anything but it runs in background and make the device run out of power.later many vulnerable variants have been programmed.the most common sym viruses are available in the URL given below,

WM DEVICES:
We know that there are two types of platforms exist,
  • 1.windows mobile 2003
    2.pocket pc
V programs are written individually for each platform.
for wm 2003,

  • 1. Backdoor.WinCE.Brador.a
    2. Backdoor.Brador.A
Backdoor variants is the Windows Mobile Trojan horses. This backdoor sends the IP address of the infected handheld to the attacker and opens TCP port 2989.

Backdoor.Brador.A will work on Windows Mobile 2003 and only affects ARM-based devices.

    2.WinCE.Infomeiti
    3.WCE / Meiti-A - Trojan

    .WinCE/Mepos.A
    .WinCE.Infomeiti
    4.comm warrior
-WinCE/InfoJack is disguised as a setup file within installation CAB files for other legitimate applications.
WinCE/InfoJack is also capable of propagating itself via an infected memory card.
Removal
PALM DEVICES:
some viruses do exist for Palm OS based devices, very few have ever been designed.

  • 1.Liberty Crack - Deletes applications and files
    2.PEMagic - Erases device ROM
    3.Phage - Deletes applications and files
    4.Vapor - Deletes applications and files

Wt to do if your mobile phone is affected by mobile viruses?

  • *the first thing is pls don't get afraid and try to know wt's the prob and wt causes it
    *don't flash ur phone unnecessarily for every thing
    *if u have a internet connection post ur queries to tech advisors for solns
    *if u found the virus variant in ur device then follow the procedures given by T.A
    *try to check whether the virus is in device or storage card.
    *if in storage card,format it
    *if in device back up ur device settings & do a factory reset.
    *if factory reset doesn't solve the problem,then go for flashing ur phone.
DO'S & DONT'S:

  • *don't unnecessarily switch on ur bluetooth reception & keeping ur device visible to others.
    *keep ur files and installed programs organized in ur file manager,it helps u to identify the virus file.
    *if any SMS such as download alert from an unidentified sender is received,first preview the msg and then open it.if it is not useful for you,then just delete the SMS.
    *An efficient precautionary step is having a good antivirus.
    *scan ur device at regular intervals for infections
MOBILE ANTIVIRUS:
there are many good antivirus programs available from the well known corps such as kaspersky,symantec,netqin,etc.
some of them are,

  • 1.kaspersky mobile security-for wm and symbian
    2.fsecure-for wm
    3.airscanner-for wm
    4.symantec-for wm and symbian(I am using this for my symbian and wm devices-cheap and best)
    5.McAfee-for wm and symbian
    6.norton mobile security-for symbian
    7.netqin-for wm(free)

I will try my best to review elaborately the mobile antivirus programs in a new post.

Symbian viruses were very irritating during the Nokia 6600 era.
