Mercury DDR RAM Qu.

Hi,

My m/B is Asus a7N-266 which supports only up to 266 MHz FSB RAM.

I've a 128 MB PC 2100 module now and my dealer gives me a 400 Mhz

Mercury DDR.

From digit articles i suppose the different FSB's cause crashes.

But to my surprise it works .

Is this config causes any harm to my rig?

What chipset is on Mercury modules?

I u use two RAM modules of different speeds,then the both run at the speed of the slowest module.
So,in ur case both will run at 266 MHz.
There is no problem in this setup and it does not harm ur computer.
If u experience crashes,then u have to set the speeds manually in BIOS.

I've heard that some DDR RAMs can have timing problems when run at a lower speed, but I've never had any problem myself running DDR400 at 266 and 333 speeds.

I've often upgraded my earlier customers' computers using A7N266 mobos by installing DDR400 RAM sticks, usually along with their existing DDR266 sticks.

And like swatkat said, it certainly won't harm your computer.

But the DDR400 will run at different timings than the DDR266 stick & so wont THAT cause some probs??

No. The two sticks will simply run at the speed of the slower unit, unless you set the speed manually from BIOS and try to force the slower RAM to run at a higher-than-normal speed, i.e., overclock it. In that case, there's the possibility of instability and/or shortened life, though some people have done it successfully.

As you point out the new module just run at 266 MHz.

Any way what is the chipset?Is it Hynix?

I supose Kobian don't have a RAM module manu.

AFAIK Kobian does not make memory chips. I have no idea what chips they use. Hynix usually have their name printed on the individual chips.
