Maya question - how to create holes in surfaces?

Hello. I have a question.

What is the simplest way to create a circular hole (or any other shape) in a surface in Maya?

Select Spherical tool /brush from standard toolsetr and drag the mouse in workspace to draw Sphere of req. size.
