the repairman can be termed 'ignorant fool' not because he said that, but because he GENERALISED it. yes sure, many people have faced this issue of their LCD TV panel going kaput within an year (samsung, to name one of the brands), and again, gone are those days when TV manufacturers used to make TVs that could last 15-20 yrs or more. the tech is evolving rapidly, and the manufacturer wont like you to stick with just one LCD for long, which will be a dent to his business, and hence quality is being compromised for quantity. also, you wont get those 'truer-to-life' blacks, near-natural colours on an LCD TV which you get on a CRT TV, superfast response times, etc, BUT, the picture processing power, the contrast, the rich colour depth (though unnatural), multimedia interface, etc (and also energy savings) that you get with an LCD panel simply cant be ignored ! and yes, if you research properly and buy an LCD TV, use it with proper care, you can rest assured that its going to serve you well for quite some time to come.
and you have a better place at forums to get suggestions and discuss than heeding an ill-advise given by a TV repairman
