Laptop For MS-PhD in CS [Questionnaire included]

1) My budget is strictly within 35000 INR.


2) I want a 14" (or less) screen that is neither too heavy to carry around (my current Lenovo from 2008 is 4 kilos!!!) and also so I can watch movies occasionally.


3) I am starting my integrated MS-PhD in Computer Science. Probable research areas include data mining, pattern recognition, but nothing is decided yet. I definitely think I'll need to work on MATLAB quite a bit. Extremely high chances of using VMWare to run multiple OSs / multiple boot for Linux and Windows-based courses. Oracle 10g, JDK, Dev C++ are staples.


4) Minimum 4GB RAM is on my mind, but I am not sure if 6GB will serve my needs better.


5) I am fond of Lenovo because my current lappy has lasted for around 6 years but the hardware is so outdated that I really need to say goodbye. Asus also seems to be a favourite among my friends.


6) Others:
Anti-glare screen is almost a necessity as I have a very bad eyesight and shouldn't put much strain on my eyes.

A battery backup of at least 3 hours.

I plan to buy in Kolkata from EMall or Chandni Market. Shop suggestions are more than welcome!

getting the first one makes more sense for work purpose. for os, Fedora is good, will probably support all ur development needs including oracle 11g (may be 12c too, just look beyond that old 10g). expandable memory up to 16gb, & comes with an unoccupied ram slot (in others both slots seem occupied, & last one has just 1 slot).

i looked for a strong i5, so that u can run future java + oracle server programs, with multiple instances, while keeping open some office applications. but to be honest @ <35k ur choices are limited, at least at fk.

check the models and check md computers / vedant / arihant / supreme computer shops for a deal price.

for now, 4gb is just the right amount of memory u need for ur works, in future u will need to upgrade.
