hey

i am having this really bad problem in my windows XP ... so as i used to sometimes do ... im using this Knoppix Live CD that i downloaded long ago...
i cant accesssss the net from windows but this post is using knoppix live cd :D :D

so this shows Linux superiority over windows DLL corruting regularly

neways ... just wanted to say tat Linux is too good ... today due to an emergency i had to print sumthin from the net ... i copied it using open office bundled with this knoppix cd and connected my canon printer and it printed the document for me :) dint expect so much from one single cd of OS .... classy again :D

had just one query though : i cant save ne file i create using this Live CD .... on my existing windows partitions .... ne ways to do tat ??? (just a crazy thought) if its possible then nuthin like it ...

n also ... add me to this section of the forum from today ... coz me too going to install Fedora 3 or Solaris 10 by next weekend and make Windows XP my second boot option :)

also ... wanted to know .... this is my HDD config ... guide me for installin Linux ...

HDD 1:

C: 20 GB (of 80 gb disk ) with windows XP with SP2 ... FAT32
D: 55 GB (of 80 gb disk ) NTFS

HDD 2:

E: 10 GB (of 20 gb disk ) FAT 32
F: 05 GB (of 20 gb disk ) FAT 32
G: 05 GB (of 20 gb disk ) FAT 32.

so wanted to know which drive shud i install linux in ... which partition .... and is backup of data of all other partitions on tat drive needed ???

this is wat my engineer suggested (he has never used linux before    )

backup data of HDD 2 onto HDD1
disconnect the HDD 1 (wich has windows)
boot with Linux distro and install linux on the HDD 2 ...........................

but i think there mite b other ways to do it which u guys must hav tried for sure ....
and also mention a good distro (just in case)
me plannin on Fedora or Solaris (as mentioned earlier)

thanks ,
harish

Just click on one of those desktop icons which are labeled as hda1, hda5 etc. and you'll be able to read your existing data. If you mount then via root then you'll be able to read-write also to your existing FAT32 partitions (NTFS access is still read-only)

Better thing would be to get hold of Knoppix 3.7 instead of older version , this latest one is really smoother than older ones.

Just a passing thought, why dont you uninstall Windows XP instead of making it a second boot option ?

Code:
HDD 1:

              C: 20 GB (of 80 gb disk ) with windows XP with SP2 ... FAT32
              D: 55 GB (of 80 gb disk ) NTFS

HDD 2:

              E: 10 GB (of 20 gb disk ) FAT 32 <-- install here
              F: 05 GB (of 20 gb disk ) FAT 32
              G: 05 GB (of 20 gb disk ) FAT 32.
If you're installing Knoppix on hard disk then select G: drive, or else if you're installing a bigger distro then install it on E:
Backup everything on D: if you need.

Debian. Get the DVD of Sarge from someone.

then consider SuSE 9.2 also. Its really smooth.

In the zone
hey to mount ur drives

run these command
In terminal
first switch use to root
for this u can use su command(* I never used Knowpix before so i m telling the basic metchod to do it)

then say u want to mount ur C drive to some folder in Home
the command
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /home/folder name
i don't know hw to mount NTFS drives
similarly for second drive just change /dev/hda1 to /dev/hdb1 nd so on

See primary portion is 1 then in secondry portion it's 5,6,7 so on so
/dev/hdb1
/dev/hdb5
/dev/hdb6
so on other the command is same..........

hey thnx for helpin out with the mountin thing ... but this is wat happens

knoppix@ttyp0[knoppix]$ su

root@ttyp0[knoppix]# mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /home/knoppix/New Folder
Usage: mount -V : print version
mount -h : print this help
mount : list mounted filesystems
mount -l : idem, including volume labels
So far the informational part. Next the mounting.
The command is `mount [-t fstype] something somewhere'.
Details found in /etc/fstab may be omitted.
mount -a [-t|-O] ... : mount all stuff from /etc/fstab
mount device : mount device at the known place
mount directory : mount known device here
mount -t type dev dir : ordinary mount command
Note that one does not really mount a device, one mounts
a filesystem (of the given type) found on the device.
One can also mount an already visible directory tree elsewhere:
mount --bind olddir newdir
or move a subtree:
mount --move olddir newdir
A device can be given by name, say /dev/hda1 or /dev/cdrom,
or by label, using -L label or by uuid, using -U uuid .
Other options: [-nfFrsvw] [-o options] [-p num].
For many more details, say man 8 mount .

root@ttyp0[knoppix]# mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /home/New Folder

root@ttyp0[knoppix]# mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /home/knoppix
mount: /dev/hda1 already mounted or /home/knoppix busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/hda1 is mounted on /mnt/hda1

so finally it said tat the dir has been mounted ... but i cudnt create any folder/file in
/mnt/hda1

can u tel me y ???

Notice the things that i highlighted in RED ... that's there you are commiting mistakes.

the folder name New Folder is invalid while passing arguments to the mount commands... coz it thinks that New is the last parameter passed to mount and the extra parameter Folder is some kind of error... what you have to give is something like this:

# mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /home/knoppix/New\ Folder

notice the \ between New and Folder... or otherwise you can avoid this ambiguity by selecting a folder name that doesn't have any intermediate spaces, like say new_folder

OR
# mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 "/home/knoppix/New Folder"

notice the "" quotations used for target folder names... this is how you specify folder names in a shell... everything in quotes... If you have worked with shell or DOS ever before then you'll at once understand what i am talking about...

/home/knoppix is the home directory of the knoppix (default user) ... you cannot mount anything onto some user's home directory... Use a blank direcctory to mount hard disks...

I think it never mounted anything... however did you check the permissions ?

So sad u cant download.

If you have Reliance or Indicom, try dling with that connection.
I downloaded all 3 ISOs of Mandrake 10, took me nearly a month for all the three to get downloaded. (RConnect)

// Dont ask me why i downloaded, I just did for the heck of it.

I am now dling WinXP x64bit version (Indicom). I am also having GTA Classics and Solaris 10 in the list.

Getting BSNL Broadband next month (hopefully), then i dont what would be left for me to dl.
