Is over clocking safe?

I have a p4 1.8 ghz pc in 256mb ram....i845gv mobo...my mobo cd came wit warpspeeder which claims twud check for itself whether wat max speed my cpu supports n set it itself...i tried once n it went upto 2.1 ghz...n was calculating....it sayz it ll automatically restart if a speed is not supported....i was getting scared as it went on to 2.1ghz testing fps on a 3d screen wit my agp card....so i shut it down

now is it safe to let these softies handle my overclocking management....is it safe n is it worth overclocking?

Overclocking voids your warranty,keep that in mind.
U can safely overclock by around 8-10%.You can even o/c further but that would require additional cooling.

o/c is risky if u r a newbie .. do it at ur own risk. go through lots of guides/tuts before u try out anything.

well im quite a newbie in this....thought did try out in my old system clocking pIII 500mhz to 600khz from cmos....infact my board stopped responding when i tried for 650 so i had to reset cmos settings n then stayed wit normal 500mhz.....now its a bit faster case here....wat if i do arrange some extra external cooling to my cpu?

if u want to oc.first check that you have suffice cooling.run stress test to see that you get right speed to make it work at optimum level.

ok, from what u have said there is no problem in letting this program handle ur comp, as long as it is not changing ur voltage settings, so just check if this piece of software is changing ur voltage setting or not, if it's not, let it do anything it wants, it will not harm.

Depends on things, u will se difference in games that might sometimes be slower on ur comp otherwise, and also the time of video encoding, but this is a hard to answer question because how much difference u call noticable depends on you.

The thing is, If i were you i would have dont it, but again, i enjoy overclocking.
So the decision is urs.

Overclocking produces more heat into ur processor so be sure about perfect cooling arrangements. And overclocking reduces the processor life slightly.

well summing up all ive decided im going against overclocking....if its not making that big difference....ofcourse im not counting d exact fps for every game....on d other hand it may harm my cpu....ive already burnt pIII....but i may not be that lucky that i wud get upgrade again in dis case...newez thanx guys

Big mistake, u cant have any significant increase in temperatures just by increasing frequency, the process of overclocking involves voltage hike often, and that is what generates more heat, it depends on person to hike voltage or not to.

I had a P3 500MHz Slot1 processor with a priya 810 mobo...

ran it at 620MHz, 24/7 for over an year. made huuuuge difference while playing GTA3

Overclocking 5-10 % is safe enough. But u shud check that the temperatures dont get 2 high!!!!

U will c difference of overclocking when u use programs which need a lot of processing

when i used celeron 700MHZ i saw a great performance boost

But with my current PC i hardly find ne better performance

if ur PC is slow, u'll find a good diference, if it's already fast enough to run most applications easily, u'll find difference only in games and video encoding

well i say it clearly again...

my spec:

p4 1.8GHz 400mhz fsb wit 256kb L2 cache,
256 mb DDR ram @ 266mhz,
i845GV board (Gigabyte),
ATi Radeon 9200SE 128mb 8X (AGP, Gigabyte)

i play games like nfsmw, cricket 2005, half-life 2, doom 3 and some multiplayer on dial-up (old games)

apart frm games...surfing, ripping n compressing, mobile applications, cd burning etc.

problems i face- dunno whether i get optimum speed wit applications but nfsmw hangsup for long time during d race which costs me a heavy loss...although i guess this is a ram issue....

so wat u ppl say...im a newbie in this so need good advices after gving out all my system info

dude, i have alreasy given my advice, overclocking is not dangerous, and see if there are overclocking features in BIOS, that is the best place to overclock.

u are way too much worried about it, unless u dont change the voltages, u can consider urself safe.

if u want to be more sure about things, just run prime 95 for an hour at sotck and see if everything is normal, the temperature etc....

well dude,

u can overclock yr CPU only if u hav a good MOBO, yr mobo should have some features like automatic fan control, cpu overheat warning siren, extreme temp shutdown feature, etc. while overclocking, keep a keen look on the temps. yr cpu, is very prone to overheating, so buy some more cooling equipments 4 yr system(like additional sys fans, larger heat sink, faster cpu fan, etc). make sure yr MoBo is of good quality(n brand like ASUS, MSI, etc). n then start OCing slowly. n remember 2 keep the side panel open( in case of no responsive cpu) to reset bios. n yes, NEVER try all this stuff if u have a computer table with completely closed cabinet rack. keep yr cabinet in horizantal position(if required).

n remember NEVER overclock with bad quality mobos. replace yr mobo with a good quality(preferbly a higher end) MOBO.

Its a williamette...dont even think of overclocking that

BTW, i have a AXP 2500+ 1.833GHz oced to 3200+ 2.2GHz running 24/7

Normally Over clocking do not make much difference in the normal case but yes when u r gon for heavy applications overclocking do help.
