I have a SATA 80GB Seagate HDD. Recently it started acting up n I could not boot into my OS(WinXP with 4 NTFS partitions of 20 GB each). I tried to remove the partitions n reformat the drive but I could not do the same in WinXP setup as the computer hung up while starting the setup. Also, when I plugged it into another system I could not boot to the OS there too(I was trying to boot using the other system's harddisk.) Is this all due to a virus??

Sys config. Intel 2.8C processor, Intel 865GV motherboard, 256MB DDR RAM.

It cant be a virus. It sounds strange that it prevented other OS from booting as well.
Get a win 98 bootable CD or Floppy and boot into the computer where you have connecte the harddisk. If you really want to reformat and dont want the data, then you can use fdisk utility to make partitions or delete them.
Then, boot with the help of XP cd and format the partitions as you like with the help of partition manager before setup.

Definitely looks like a drive error. Many Seagate SATA 80 gig drives (the SI112 model) have been known to fail spontaneously without a single SMART error being generated. The best thing to do is to either run the SeaTools yourself or connect the drive to another computer (a friend's if available) and read the SMART status. That should give you a clear indication that the drive has in fact, screwed up. Try to reinstall/repair the OS. If it bluescreens at the installation/repair, then its definitely the drive.

I tried a bootable win98 CD and used fdisk too but could not delete the partitions...I think it's a drive problem n so have given it to the vendor for repairing.
