This is an interesting question!!!!
When is a computer obsolete???
Immedeatley after a new model is launched?? Or after its no longer useful??
Depends on what you want to use it for ofcourse. If youre an ordfinary home user who plays a few games and uses office applications then this sytem is definetly not obsolete especially for say two years!!!!
Games like half life run fine on even ti4200's of course at lesser fps.
And i dont think you need to access big terabyte databases or edit several movies at a time!!!
there are two reasons to upgrade any cmoputer:
One is if you really cant do much with the PC and you need to upgrade. that would be if you have a pentium I class PC. Hell , even my old P2 runs all office applications very well and even lets me play a few of the older games!!! At the moment it works solely as amn internet gateway for my home.
The other is if you are an "enthusiast" and you really need to have the "latest and the greatest". then of course you need to upgrade!!!!!
allyndlima:
The amd sempron is not based on the thornton, but on the thoroughbred B core.
64 bit semprons are based on the paris core which is nothing but a newcastle core with the 64 bit removed:

If youre in the mood to upgrade then go ahead and sell it. But if you dont NEED to upgrade and are happy with the performance then dont sell it right now!!
Why???
Because the socket 754 athlon 64 is already on its way out. Soon AMD will only be selling socket 939 athlon 64 and socket940 opterons(for servers and workstations). These 939 chips are still very expensive in india if you can get them at all!!
So wait>
Use your pc while it still is useful and upgrade the graphics card only if you are having problems in games. This is becuase games are the only thing that will be difficult for your PC.
In another few months to an year socket 754 will probably be phased out except in india, where it will be the entry level model as companies will get rid of their old stocks in poor markets like india.
.
Then an athlon 64 939 , processor will make sense.
Of course by that time dual cores will be out .
Then i guess your socket 939 athlon cpu ( not motherboard) will be outdated and you must sell it!!!!
