Mate why 5000+ ? when u can get 5200+ with 2mb L2 cache for few hundred bucks more?2mb L2 cache will make a difference, and it shud b the least u shud luk for today if u going for AMD!!

I guess, this should be quite enough to convince yourself to go with the 4800+ or the 5000+ :D

There are lot more benchmarks done but visit the source to get all of them.

these benchmarks r at stock speeds.now we hav been telling him from the 1st to go for a E4400 only if he wants to oc,else its better to go for X2 5000+.
oc both X2 5000+ and E4400,the E4400 will anihilate the X2 5000+.

Guys, this is where the problem starts. I've read all your comments and come to realize that under normal working conditions, AMD X2 5000+ will better than C2D E4400 and there are similarly priced too. But if you consider OCing then C2D E4400 will be a winner. The catch is for OCing u need a dedicated graphics card and a real good mobo too, thereby negating the whole PRICE POINT.

Coz' for good power performance from E4400 u need 1.Dedicated Graphics Card + 2.Good Mobo. Here I fear the combined cost will be waaaay higher than intended 8-9K !!!

Intel Camp, can u suggest relatively cheaper option by which I can OC the E4400 upto 3Ghz. If buying seperate graphics card is so necessary for OCing, can I opt for a cheaper mobo with seperate gfx. card so that the combined cost is not way out of my budget of 8-9000/-

Refreshing info, thx a lot, cyrus :)

Let me divert a bit here, for a budget of around 3.5K, AMDX2 is the only choice, no doubt. What is interesting to observe in these graphs is that within X2s, the performance increase is not linear. It is linear only for synthetic benchmarks. For gaming and other things, X2 3800+ outperforms X2 4000+ in almost all graphs, X2 4200+ outperforms X2 4400+ in almost all graphs. Infact, in some cases, X2 4200+ outperforms both X2 4600+ and X2 4800+. If these results are to be believed, then one can infer:

AMD X2 3800+ is a pretty good proc. at 2,600/-
AMD X2 4200+ at 3,500/- is the best chip within 4K

I am going with X2 4200+ :p

BTW, experts, why the performance increase is not linear?

Hmmmm.. Interesting obeservation. I didn't notice that.

Did a bit of googling, and this is what I found.

As you can see, both 4200+ and 3800+ use a different stepping compared to the other procs. So, I guess that this stepping makes a lot of difference in the performance.
