There is a recent circular issued by Department of Telecommunications to all Internet service providers.According to this circular, Dot has instructed ISPs that every Individual/Company using Wireless Services have to Compulsorily register their Wi-Fi equipment with their Internet provider; failing their service would be disconnected.

The main points given in circular are:-

*
o Every internet user in country has to register his wireless equipment with his ISP. All ISPs make sure that this rules is duly followed.
o The Subscriber is fully responsible if any kind of illegal/anti social activities made through his Internet connection.
o For Existing Subscribers, ISP would inform them about this directive and give a notice for compliance. if a subscriber does not follow, his connection would be suspended until he registers.

I got this email from my ISP (Tata Indicom) asking me to register 2 days ago.

Dear Customer,

As you are aware it is our constant endeavour to continuously offer services that ensures utmost satisfaction of our customers.

While doing so, we have designed, implemented and are constantly reviewing our processes to safeguard national security interests while we carry out our business of licensed services. In this process we are also committed to extend all our support and cooperation to the Government, as and when required.

You would no doubt be aware of recent cases of misuse by the anti-social and anti-national elements, of internet access provided to the customers by various ISPs particularly when internet access using W-iFi technology.

In order to overcome this problem, Department of Telecom has recently issued a directive dated 23-02-09 to ensure secured use of Wi-Fi based internet access under the delicensed frequency band(Directive attched)

Under this directive, any usage of Wi-Fi connectivity including deployment of Wi- Fi Routers by the customers themselves needs to get registered with us to meet compliance of DoT guidelines and instructions.

Therefore, if you are using a Wi-Fi router to access your broadband connection kindly register with us by filling in the attached format and mailing to us at regwifi@tatacommunications.com within 30 days of receipt of this communication.

Please note, Tata Communications Internet Services Limited will not be in any way held responsible or answerable in case any unauthorized usage of WiFi technology resulting into the non-compliance of DoT directive is detected within your Premises/Location by the Authorities concerned.

Please note that any liability including civil and criminal liability for such unauthorized use and any resulting event connected thereto will be your sole responsibility. We would also be constrained to withdraw our services without any further notice in such an eventuality and without any liability on our part.

Continued usage of Wi-Fi connectivity or deployment of router without registration shall amount to unauthorized usage of Wi-Fi technology.

We would request for your immediate response and co-operation on this issue of importance in the interest of the national security.

Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,
For Tata Communications Internet Services Ltd.

I say its better than doing nothing. They should also make it compulsory that the routers sold in India do not have the no authentication open connection option.

Well there is nothing wrong with registering as long as it's free. But what I do not understand is how this data will ever be useful for them. They are just burdening themselves with a whole lot of paperwork.

The positive fallout of this is that people will be forced to take their wifi security a little more seriously now. They cannot say, I did not know......., It wasn't me.........., etc.

Too bad for all those who were using their ignorant neighbour's internet for muft.

what do you think google is doing with its huge amount of data they collect on us everyday of course it is not useful to them
this only reminds me of some stupid conspiracy theories about controlling/censoring the internet under the name of national security just as it was done in usa by patriot act

I fail to get how will registering our Wi-Fi network help track them the terrorists? The network is internal, all the IP addresses will be local. Its the WAN IP addresses which the Govt. should be bothered about.

If I haf a A/DSL connection and plug the the device acting as gateway to my wireless router, how will information about my internal n/w (limited to wireless router) help the Govt. track the bad guys?

i dont know wht to say.

implemneting is good in one way...

but at same time , putting the innoncent citizen in place of terrorist activity is STupidity to the core.

India is not that dev for people to fully understand the wifi .. etc..

they dont even know how to setup a WEP / WPA secured wifi .. but even these things are now hacked.. ( GOOGLE )

and the best way to go is MAC filter.. but it needs you to ifnd all the mac Ids of the pc/ laptop / ps3/ psp / etc etc and add them...

and if you are usign in a shop , then this option is out of the window..

Govt is taking some action , i appreciate , but blaming everyting on wifi owner is too mucj

Hmm... now i am crossed :( , My ISP doesn't allows to use a router or any sharing device..( as if i was gonna tell em..) but after this regulation , i will be forced to consider wired option..
beside: what are the routers in market offering MAC filtering? How secure is it?

All the routers offer MAC filtering. This will not provide protection against sniffing or snarfing the packets. All it does is restrict other users from sucking up your b/w by not allowing them to hook up to your router.

The Indian government SERIOUSLY needs to start ICS exams like IAS/IPS/IFS exams for computer graduates.
We need an Indian Computing Service set of Hackers to guide the misguided and backward government on what technology is about and to secure it from chinese crackers and terrorists.

yes snipping is still on...

but they cant hook up and send any kind of info thru our network / broadband , as terrorist would do..

so still mac filtering is best to go.. but adding mac is one time process... and very safe...

but for password stealerrs ... sniffing can be useful tool..

For Cracking WPA2-PSK you need lots of time, Computing Power and Knowledge of Linux systems. It is easier to say than done:p
