An anti-piracy watchdog has welcomed the destruction of a suspected Somali pirate vessel in the Gulf of Aden by an Indian navy warship.

INS Tabar sank the pirate "mother ship" after it did not stop for investigation and instead opened fire, an Indian navy statement said on Wednesday.

Update: India navy 'to go after pirates'

The Indian navy has been given formal approval by the United Nations to go after pirate ships in Somali waters, the BBC has learnt.

The UN approval authorises India to go in "hot pursuit" of pirates, naval sources told the BBC.

It was a very nice and brave move. The UN with other affected countries should eliminate piracy altogether along that coast.
