Hello !

This is my first post here :)

I am looking to assemble a Core2Duo E8400 based PC (have this processor in reach).
I am looking for socket775 Mobo + RAM combination.
(have HDDs, 450W PSU, ATX cabinet, and other peripherals )

Quite confused on what the most value for money board would be.
A DDR3 based board like Gigabyte g41M Combo, or a DDR2 based board ?

Budget for board : around 5K, RAM : extra 2-3K.
The system need not be FutureProof, but the most 'value for money'.
The primary purpose on this system is image-editing (RawTherapee/ GIMP /DarkTable).

[I recently acquired a pre-owned SONYG520P CRT monitor, for color correction purpose (studio print matching). unfortunately the i3 4GB laptop lags too much, when the display is connected as secondary. The monitor is 2048x1536@60Hz capable, but intending only 1024x768 now, via VGA cable.

Template answered :
1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans: GIMP, RawTherapee / DarkTable, for editing RAW image files. Some what like Photoshop / Lightroom.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: 6-8K (max10K)

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: yes, with an eye on temperature.

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Linux (Mint 13-Mate, Ubuntu derivative)

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: 500 GB SATA x 2 available, intending to use it.

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: Sony CPD G520, which is expected to run on 1024x768 via VGA cable. [Any advices on graphic cards which could feed it with 2048x1536@60Hz via HD15 cable is warmly welcomed, but might be quite out of my budget ]

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: HDD, ATX cabinet, 450W PSU, Mouse, Keyboard, Monitor

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: in a week or two.

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: have assembling / installation experience.

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: Online : OK, or direct pickup from Bangalore or Kerala.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: I would cherish even the smallest insights !! Thankyou in advance.

hi,

E8400 CPU : To be bought from a friend. That would cost like around 2K.

I can look for other options too(like switching to a good AMD config), just that I wish it holds in the net budget.

Thankyou for the reply !

Looks good.

I think I would probably commit on the G2020 based, or a cheaper E8400 rig itself.

Is there a way to find if a processor is toasted by unsafe overclocking ? Any tool to check stability of specific software ? [Like the RAM check operations available in most distros ?]

Go for the config suggested by harshilsharma-its a much better option than building a new system with an outdated C2D cpu.

If a processor has been "toasted" by reckless OCing, then it will no longer work or will cause the system to crash/hang or generate BSODs every now and then i.e. it will lead to system unstability.

You can use Memtest86+ for RAM testing, Prime95 for CPU and ram testing and MSI Komboster for GU testing.
