Hmmm... in case u want to write as data DVD, u can do the usuall procedure that u do with burning a data CD.

In case u need to write a dvd- video: (in case u use nero)
1. First start a new compilation . File-->new compilation
2. Select "DVD-video" from that list.
3. Now do other formalities and u r done now :D

I have had the same problem
The solution is quite simple
When you create a DVD file with WinAVI, what the software does is create the entire DVD structure consisting of 2 folders:
 AUDIO_TS
 VIDEO_TS
The AUDIO_TS folder is empty
The VIDEO_TS folder has 5 files:
 VIDEO_TS.IFO
 VIDEO_TS.BUP
 VTS_01_0.IFO
 VTS_01_0.BUP
 VTS_01_0.VOB
When you create a second DVD file with WinAVI, it creates another set of similar files.
If you try to import both DVD files into Nero, it will result in an error because it does not know which set of files to take as each one is an entire DVD disk structure in itself.

To author a DVD with several files you can get DVD Shrink 3.2.
Get it here *www.dvdshrink.org/

Start DVD Shrink
Choose Re-author
Now navigate to the folder where your DVD file was stored.
Instead of seeing VOB, IFO and BUP files, there will only be a single video file named Title 1
Add it to your compilation
Repeat the steps to add as many files as you want
When you are finished, click on Backup
Choose your DVD Write and start the burn process

see there are two kind of format that need to be in a DVD ie.1.IFO and the 2.The main file that is....well dont remember the main so if u dont have that IOB file then the data cannot be read hence u must have got it while converting the avi or divx format so check the folder where u got the main file that u are saying, there must be some other files too.

If you're using Nero, you can save yourself a lot of trouble by using NeroVision Express 2. Start NVE2, select Make DVD>DVD-Video and then select "Add Video Files" and then add the files, Nero will automatically adjust the bitrate, the size, the aspect ratio, output format, and also allow you to create menus, etc. and then just click the "Burn" button and it will automatically transcode DivX/xviD content into DVD-Video and burn it.
