How to use a FTP program?

I would like to know how to use a FTP program? I have downloaded Filezilla but am unable to use it as it requires port settings and other things. Please tell me whether it is legal or not.

FTP Port is 21.
You will need to enter the server address to which you wanna upload files (or download from) like ftp server for Opera is ftp.opera.com . If the server requires authentication then you'll have to put username and password too.

Nothing is illegal unless you use it for illegal purpose.
