OK, now I myself have a camcorder and have converted DV-AVI to Xvid.
The results are great, very minimal loss in video quality. Now dude, if you have problems getting all the codecs mentioned in the above link then try installing K-Lite mega codec pack (latest). You will get everything in it, be it LAME MP3, Xvid, DivX etc.
Then do as give in there, use Virtual Dub:
1.Open the video file in virtual dub
2.Deinterlace
3.Resize
4.Select Video compression type
5.Select audio compression type
6.Save the file as AVI and you are done.
Now if you don't know how to do all this then please let me know, I will tell you everything in detail then.
