Look here for a step by step procedure to create a Rescue CD(using BartPE) :

and this one too:

You can change the settings for Virtual memory : Right Click My Computer and select properties. Under XP click advanced tab. Click settings under performance. Click Advanced tab and click change button where it says virtual memory.

Under win98 similar procedure exists - Right Click my computer and look for the Virtual Memory settings. There you can select to manually specify the location where your swap file should reside and how big it can grow.

Yes i know how to do this. i have moved my swap file sucessfully.but the pagefile.sys i cannot remove from c:\. i can delete it under 98 but when i boot to winxp(media center edition) i get it back.

You should change it both under Windows 98 and Windows XP. Each OS has its own swap file. That explains the two swap files in two different partitions. Are you sure you specifed manual location for the swap file in both the OS?

see i have 8 partitions across my hard disks.
on drive d: i have windows98 swap
amd on drive e: i have xp swap.
both these files are named win386.swp.

what is the pagefile.sys file for? i don't think its a virtual ram file. since in xp i clearly specified it to use only e: for virtual memory

gaurav,
The win98 swap file is as u say named win386.swp. But the Windows XP swap file is called Pagefile.sys and not win386.swp
I can confirm this, because I am using Windows XP and there is no such file name win386.swp on any of my partitions.
Try this: delete the win386.swp file under your Windows XP partiton and see if it gets recreated. :)
