Friends, I need an external HDD to take my collection of "goodies" with me when I travel, so kindly give your suggestions. Initially I was inclined towards 2.5" drives but then I realized I needed bigger capacity drives and so opted for 3.5" drives (though their disadvantage is that they need external power supply). I have shortlisted a few...

BRAND NEW 250 GB WESTERN DIGITAL EXTERNAL HDD WITH 3.5 INCHES USB CASING WITH WARRANTY Rs. 5800

NEW 300 GB SEAGATE EXTERNAL USB HDD THROUGH 3.5 INCH CASING Rs.6245

NEW 400 GB SEAGATE USB EXTERNAL HDD 7200 RPM WITH 3.5 INCHES CASING Rs.9295

400GB Maxtor External Hard Drive £89.99 I think this is the best deal.

These are all ready-to-use drives.Do you think If I buy the components separately and assemble them, I could get a better deal ? And in case I decide to buy from a shop , please provide names of shops (in Kolkata) where I can lay my hands on these :p

And what is the approx price of a 4 GB pen drive nowadays ? Maybe I'll buy one for small backups.

It is preferable to purchase an internal hard disk and an enclosure for it because it will work out cheaper... The only advantages of external hdd is slightly more rugged and has easy-to-use backup software

Buy a 160GB 5.4k RPM Laptop HDD and put it in a casing, transcend has a really nice selection, the convenience is worth it. It's a pain lugging around a bulky external HDD. It'll cost you about 11 to 12k. On the other hand if you really need that much portable space, you'll have to opt for a regular 3.5" HDD.
