"Help in Java Project"

I wuz planning to do a Java project to control electronic gadgets in a room. The plan was to send digital signals vial serial/parallel ports and then use an electronic interface to convert them to electric pulses. Is this possible. Can anyone help me out by suggesting wat is exactly needed in doin this.what can be used as the electronic interface here.Please help me soon.
