The No.1 Stupid
Hi guys ,
Yesterday evening , I started scanning my PC with McAfee and went to sleep. When I woke up (after 3 hours), I saw My PC is off , even the UPs was off. It was strange as we have inverter thus PC atleast UPS should be On. Then I tried to switch On the UPS but it didnt as the button was already ON , then I pressed it again , It made a small sound like it always makes before getting to green light from red. But after that sound , this time the light didnt went green . The UPS didnt started , hence I cudnt start my CPU. I checked the fuse of MY UPS and it was blown . I replaced the Fuse and tried to start the UPs again but again it didnt started , I again checked the fuse and the new fuse also got blown. I cudnt understand what the problem is and tried switching On my Pc directly without UPS, this time CPU started , gave a musical beep and monitor gave me message that "the CPU was previously shutdown due to thermal event(overheating) , service the unit right away to resolve this. Press F4 to resume. Press <F2> to run set up Hit <F12> if you want to boot from the network 423C " .
I half heartedly pressed F4 and Bootloader appeared , I selected XP (from XP and Ubuntu) and windows started but when I tried to do some work in it , it hanged and HDD red light was continously flashing. I restarted and then windows worked fine and I directly connected to net and posted this thread. I just wanna know what might be the problem with my UPS ?? Also , should I get my CPU( and tell me what in CPU ??? MOBO or processor or RAM or what ?? because official service centers of all of them will be different) checked by the service center ???? And now should i continue to use my PC before getting it checked or not ???

My system specs :
P4 2.4
Intel D845GVSR MOBO
512 MB ram
seagate 250 GB IDE HDD
XP SP2 and Ubuntu edgy.

PS: This has happened with me for the first time hence I m worried :(. Please excuse me if I made my problem look like the biggest one possible.:(

[Update: That time I switched off my PC , now I started again and again it gave the same sound and message and again I pressed F4 and posting this message . I think there is something wrong in my CPU , please guide me as to what to do.]

Looks like an electric surge got through to your system. Its not really possible to say what the exact problem is, but youll have to get your whole system checked up if this is the case.
Just take a look n see if all the fans in your cabinet are running properly (CPU fan, motherboard chipset fan, PSU fan, gfx card fan). Maybe one of these has gone bad and thats why its overheating...

^^ He is right.

The CPU fan might be broken causing the CPU to overheat because AFAIK, P4 2.4GHz proc doesn't heat that much to cause a burnout.

The electric surge theory is also possible since the UPS fuse was blown twice. Get your eletrical wiring checked by an electrician.

Use a temp monitoring s/w like Speedfan and monitor the temp of the CPU.

Sorry to see this prob. I know how it feels cause I suffered from the same prob in previous month. Now I have a new config with the same old CPU (Procy)

My old config was:
P4 2.4 GHz
Intel 845 GVSR mobo
768 MB RAM

The computer frequently turned off while scanning for viruses through Avast or while playing games.Someone told that its due to overheating of CPU.

What the real prob was the heat-sink on the CPU. The thermal paste was completely hardened with no liquid part left in it.
I suggest you to get the heat sink in proper place first and check if its fine.
Take time in cleaning the metallic structure and placing it after applying the paste.

@Blackpearl : 845 GVSR doesn't support Temp. management using speedfan and other since it has no sensors.
