There are only 2 external ssd brand worth buying nowadays anyway, samsung T & crucial X models. Check reviews of both on tomshardware/anandtech.

Even non returnable items can be replaced if dead on arrival can be proved/believed by customer care. Non-returnable typically means only replacement but no refund.
