Google Drive is set to be rolled out, sometime in the middle of next week, according to this article, with 5 GB of free space. Set to be released for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS.

Google Drive expected next week, app details leaked

News of Google’s cloud based storage service called ‘Drive’ has been making the rounds for a while now. After months and months of rumours and speculations of the launch, it now appears that it is coming out soon. Almost definitely next Tuesday is the day, according to a news covered by The Next Web. The news comes to them through sources and partners who are working closely with Google. As expected, the service will launch with 5GB of free space being given to each user with the option to upgrade the space by paying for it.

We had already covered news on the screenshots of the service as well as the availability of a desktop client in the recent past. Now however, there are reports by Techcrunch of a leaked OS X software. The tool is out there and like most online storage services, it’s meant to connect with the Google Drive service. While the app installs fine, the service itself isn’t active and enabled for users, so there’s no way to try it out. The software helps link your file manager to the service so you don’t have to depend on the web browser to upload files to it. Users should be able to simply drag and drop files from their PC to the online storage.

The ones to be impacted the most are services such as Dropbox that offer a similar service. Dropbox for example offers 2GB of free space to its free users. Of late, they’ve started promotions, where free users can get upto 16GB of free space by asking their friends to register for accounts with Dropbox. The other big name in the cloud storage space is Microsoft with their Skydrive service that offers some 25GB of free space online. Google, however, will have the advantage of its massive user base who will most likely be the ones using the service.

Every company you name it, is now talking about "Cloud" "Storage"

Microsoft has it already --- SkyDrive.

Apple has it already --- iCloud. [ works similar to Dropbox with the hidden "mobile documents" folder ]

Now Google jumps into this.... lol

God knows, what will happen to the PRIVACY of the files being shared through this services.

I even heard Facebook will also offer Cloud based storage solutions [ for pics and vids ]

Guys read the terms of service. It states Google will own all the files you upload. For me, I will not be bothering to use this service

Quote, link?

AFAIK, Google has a single privacy policy and term of service across all its services. I cannot find your claims anywhere.

GDrive has indepth search. (eg. keywords will be searched for data in doc files + OCR Image search+ real time collaboration of docs with other users) .if they dont have rights, how else you expect this feature to be there in system ?

also whats the guarantee that MS wont use our data no matter what policy they have ?

People make way too much of a deal with terms of conditions. It's all about control, wherever you use cloud, you lose your control. Care that much for privacy? Build your own server/VPS and share files via Sparkleshare (still a WIP).

GDrive doesn't seem anything special though. Dropbox users need not move.

really?
Don't confuse GDrive with Google Drive. GDrive was a third party application, which used Google as a storage platform. But since it was not directly from Google, I never trusted it.
Now that Google have themselves launched the cloud, I think it would be good now to save large but non personal files.

I trust Dropbox more than Google. And have already put my Documents folder inside Dropbox instead of vice versa (which is by default). Now my complete documents folder (which comes to around 4 GB) will be backed up on cloud. And I can access it even from my Android.

Is there any Invitation required for this?

No. But it will be rolled out for everyone soon. Still not got my Drive.
