GNOME is a Desktop for Linux OS.It's the beautiful visuals u see when u boot up into Linux (apart from KDE).It's a Free software under GNU.
Apart from a GUI it has all the application u need for day to day computing ranging from a simple game to Office suite to Antivirus.Also GNOME supports vast number of programming languages so that u can write ur own app.It has extensive help and support for end user and is one of the highly preferred GUI desktop for Linux.

GNOME stands for GNU Network Object Model Environment. It is one of the desktop environments that come with almost all GNU/Linux systems. The other popular desktop environment is KDE (K Desktop Environment). There are a few more, e.g. XPDE
You can switch betweem the environments to have a totally different user interface and set of applications. Some applications specifically designed for a particular DE won't work with others.
If you want to have a look at KDE and GNOME, go to any Linux installation machine. Or have a look at Knoppix (based on KDE) or Gnoppix (based on GNOME). Both are live distros i.e. start directly from CD without installation and both are based on Debian.
BTW, die hard GNU fans (like GNUrag here
) prefer GNOME
