Hi i have a few questions, hope people here will help me..
Alright i am presently using a 40GB HDD, PATA(since 5 years) which is almost full now, so i decided to buy a 160GB second HDD(The vendor said my system wont support bigger HDD :(, its P4 1.6GHZ, 256MB RAM, i845 intel.)
I will be formatting the first one and reinstalling the windows.. Now the questions is should i install the OS on the first one and use the new one for all the other things?? I download a lot of movies/music/apps etc., how should i go about it? Basically i am confuse about the partitioning..
Also i am kinda noob in partitioning/OS installation, havnt done that before... I have a lot of apps etc installed and it would be a pain to install them all over again, is there a way around it? (I heard about some HDD image thingy, but dunno how it works..)

Hope someone will clear out my confusions... :)
Thanx.

Hi buddy, the vendor is cheating you. The same thing was told to me when i wanted to install another 320GB drive apart from existing 80GB but people here assured me that i can go ahed and buy the 320GB. If you have SP2 installed in XP then you can buy larger drives than 160GB and enjoy the space :)
My mobo is Intel 845 GVSR and i think its the same as yours and i am enjoying it :D. the only downside is you should buy PATA(IDE) drives as there are no SATA ports in the mobo which would be 400-500 bucks more than SATA ones. So if you have bought it already then ask for a replacement.
The limitation is XP based and not hardware based. Just install SP2 to resolve it.

As for the backup/imaging try Acronic True Image Home Edition and i dont know any freewares(I may be wrong here).
Yes you can use the new one for Multimedia stuff (thats why we buy such huge monsters, dont we :D)

I am using a 80 + 250GB in XPSP3. I have a Asrock i845V too.
As for the partitioning, use Ranish Partition manager or Powerquest Partition Magic or GParted.

^This is what he said when the vendor came to see my PC. "Its a risk connecting any driva larger than 160 GB". :D I knew something was fishy, so i hopped to this forum and got the answer and then told him to update his "database". I cant describe how his face melted!! He also quoted me Rs 3000 for 160 GB
I went ahead and bought Seagate 300 GB for Rs 3150/=
They just have to sell their product where they get more commission/profit. Lets face it most people are un-awares about hardwares(i am talking about non-geeky ones).

Just go ahead and buy it yourself and no need for vendors to connect them. Its damn easy!!

I think 160 gb will support ur system :D.....what u can do is connect ur 40 gb hdd as primary master and 160 gb as slave ...boot into 40 gb where ur Windows is installed and create partition for 160 gb using disk management utility ..;)

I will suggest keeping 160 GB (or whatever) as primary and 40 GB in a casing as an external storage.

New hard disk will have a longer life. So you won't have to bother about formatting and re-installing OS any time soon. More reliable and may be even speed will increase. Is the new one higher RPM?

Old HD in casing will give you an external, portable storage option.

There's lots of talk going on around the non-geeks about how you can't plug in a large hard drive if you have less RAM. Its insane!
