Hi
I tried to upgrade windows xp sp2 to media centre but the upgrade failed so now when I boot the computer I get like 2 choices which includes windows xp and the other is the setup for media centre.. this is turning to be annoying and I want to remove this, so how can I do it?

Garbage

God of Mistakes...
Do the following ...
In Windows Explorer go to Tools --> Folder Options --> View
Click on "Show Hidden Files & Folders"
Also Uncheck the checkbox "Hide Protected Operating System Files"

Go to C Drive.
Here u can see a file called boot.ini
Backup this file somewhere else.

Open c:\boot.ini in Notepad

U can see some lines as -

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="setup for media centre" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT

Just delete the second entry!!!
Save & Close File.

Reboot computer!
Hope this help !

There is GUI tool to do the same.

Goto Start=>Run

Type msconfig

Look for the tab BOOT.INI at the top.

In that click delete invalid entries, or something with a similar meaning. Alternatively delete the entry that says Media Center.

You have done it!!

oooo pretty picture, but if ankush can still boot to that partition (which I would think he still can) then that won't really help. changing tmeout to 3 seconds as apposed to 30 doesn't change it either. you're best bet is to follow shirish_nagar instructions, or you will keep getting the selection, unless you have already removed the second partition with MCE on it. if so select pretty picture option.

^^ yes, if he is NOT able to boot, then only solution he has is to boot from any Live CD & EDIT BOOT.INI file provided that his original installation is NOT damaged! ;-)

BTW, I think Ankush is still busy solving his problem. coz he is not replying which way helped him :-(

Iceeeman thanks for making things bold and underlined, cuz I don't have my glasses, but me thinks you should try what he did. He will still have the option and if he picks MCE, it will go back to the "setup/install" of MCE and will fail again! because he still has some of the setup files on his computer. if he tries your way he will get a message that says something like there is nothing wrong with the boot.ini file because yest the partitions are there and there is info on both.

Chill Dude ...Wat i m tellin him is tht if he decreases the timeout , he will not have to wait for a long time ...By da way wat do ya mean by :-
Code:
if he tries your way he will get a message that says something like there is nothing wrong with the boot.ini file because yest the partitions are there and there is info on both."
And the reason y i made it Bold ,increased size etc .was tht u did not read his problem correctly .he is sayin tht his upgrade failed by u on da other side r sayin tht "i think tht it should work"

Anyways Buddy leave it ...

And Yes !!shirish_nagar u are right

Everyone is posting the same thing again and again. Why?
cuz Iceeeman can't read, but I'm tired of trying to explain it to him, so hopefully ankush's problem is solved.
