Games to be shown
The titans of the games industry are preparing to descend upon the E3 Expo in Los Angeles to show off their upcoming wares. Console-makers Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony will host keynotes, and the show floor will be awash with forthcoming games.
But what can we really expect to see? The next Xbox or PlayStation? The first real games for Nintendo's Wii U? Internet Explorer for Kinect? We go through the rumours, the speculation, the teases and the announcements to find out what to look forward to.
Nintendo (Keynote is at 17:00 BST on 5 June)
This press conference will be all about Wii U: the next-generation console that Nintendo unveiled at last year's E3. It's a powerful successor to the Wii, with a unique controller that sports a massive six-inch touchscreen on its tummy.
We should hear a little more about what the console can do -- not Epic's upcoming Unreal Engine 4, apparently -- and when we can expect to buy it -- sometime around Christmas 2012, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told Bloomberg Japan.
Most importantly, we'll hear about some actual first-party Nintendo games, and not just vague tech demos and feature show-offs. On Nintendo's Facebook page, the Japanese firm teased that it will soon reveal three "initial game releases" for the console.
The Nintendo 3DS already has lots of games on the horizon -- like Luigi's Mansion 2 and New Super Mario Bros. 2 -- but we might see a few additional titles at the show. Some speculate that Nintendo will overhaul the handheld altogether, and put out a thinner model with better battery life.
Sony (Keynote is at 02:00 BST on 5 June)
Whatever you're hoping to see on stage at Sony's late-night keynote, don't expect to see a PlayStation 4. In January, Kaz Hirai -- now Sony CEO -- told The Wall Street Journal that Sony is " not making any announcements at E3," when asked about a new console. "I've always said a ten-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that."
We might, however, see the results of a persistent rumour that says Sony will acquire one of the a cloud-based gaming outfits. Which would be either OnLive or Gaikai -- neither of which will confirm or deny internet whispers.
David Perry's Gaikai, which currently streams game demos to websites, put out an E3 invitation, promising "some major announcements … that have the potential to change the future of video games." Trade site MCV reckons that invitation puts Gaikai as the frontrunner for this rumoured acquisition.
As for games, Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream will apparently unveil its next game at Sony's conference, according to CVG. The French firm recently put out a video demo called Kara to show how far its technology has come since Rain.
We'll also see more of heavy PS3 hitters like The Last of Us (a post-apocalyptic zombie story from the studio behind Uncharted), gory God of War Accession, and Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, which has all but been confirmed for PS Vita, too.
Speaking of Sony's monster handheld, we will surely see some brand new titles for the beleaguered device. Also, we should hear a little more about the BioShock and Call of Duty games that were announced at E3s prior, and Keiji Inafune's (Mega Man) Soul Sacrifice.
Microsoft (Keynote is at 17:30 BST on 4 June)
Microsoft has stayed pretty quiet about its plans for E3 2012 but, like rival Sony, it has ruled out the possibility of showing off the Xbox 360's successor. "There will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3," Microsoft spokesperson David Dennis told Bloomberg. "For us, 2012 is all about Xbox 360."
What will that entail? Sci-fi blaster Halo 4, certainly. As well as other big franchises like Fable: The Journey and Forza Horizon.
Last year's big focus was on Kinect. At E3 2011, Microsoft issued an epic barrage of camera-enabled titles and happened to mention the device in just about every game demo, from Ghost Recon to Minecraft. We certainly haven't heard the last of Kinect.
We'll probably hear a lot about services and entertainment. Over the last six years, the Xbox 360 has evolved from games console to all-round media hub, and the E3 keynotes have reflected that with big focuses on apps like ESPN and UFC.
Sources say that Microsoft is currently testing a modified version of Internet Explorer 9 on Xbox 360, which would use voice commands and Kinect gestures to whiz around the web. A recent Microsoft job application was looking for someone to help fit Skype into Xbox, but the brief mentions the "next generation of Xbox," not the 360.
The rest
There are plenty of multiplatform games that we want to hear more about at E3. There's fantasy MMO Elder Scrolls Online, Revolutionary-War-based Assassin's Creed 3, the just-announced Dead Space 3, and whatever happened to Insomniac's Overstrike from E3 2011?
Grand Theft Auto V, sadly, will miss the show. The notoriously secretive Rockstar will skip the show, according to CVG, and will reveal the sandbox sequel on its own terms.
Same goes for Portal-maker Valve. It will attend the expo to show off Counterstrike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, and the TV-centric Steam interface, but "we are not announcing Half-Life 3 or Portal 3 or Left 4 Dead 3," Valve representative Doug Lombardi told Joystiq. Aww.
As for Apple? You'd be better off waiting for WWDC 2012, which runs from 11 to 15 June in San Francisco.
