Dropping fps in games.

I recently upgraded my old Pentium 4 with the following config:
Intel i3 540 @ 3.07 Ghz
4 GB DDR3 RAM
500 GB HDD
Nvidia Geforce GT 240 GDDR5 1 GB (not installed yet)

I used to play Counter-Strike 1.6 on my old machine with XP and it used to give a constant 30 fps at widescreen settings.
I dont know why but I'm getting hardly 20-30 fps on this one too, and sometimes it drops to 7-8 fps during gameplay.
I'm currently running Win 7 Ultimate, ESET anti-virus.
Tried to stop unwanted processes, it boosted the fps to 40-50 but then after 2 minutes again goes to 15-20 fps.
I dont know whats keeping it down. Please help.

I have a feeling that eset anti virus might be a problem here. Also try using this and see if it helps

How much ram is used at normal and CPU usage.
During gameplay.
CPU Usage - 0%
Physical Memory Usage - 26%

Game Booster is for ping reduction I guess, not for increasing FPS.

Of course, all drivers are installed.

No.Its for a slight increase in FPS.As it closes all the Unwanted Processes

I installed NFS Most Wanted. And ran at everything full.
Now here's what happened:
Got all the eye candy, but ran smoothly for like 3 minutes and then again, lagging stuff.
Must've been like 3 fps after 10 min of gameplay, and then the PC turned off.
Didn't get start for like 10-15 seconds, CPU made some beeps, then started again.
So I guess its an over-heating issue.
Gonna install some software for viewing processor temperature.
I'll post the temperatures here.

Here's the stats after 10 minutes of crashing.

And after 6-7 minutes of Counter-Strike both cores maxed at 105 degrees.
Too much of course. And I dont even want to check on NFS, it might burn down my processor :p
Any solutions?
The cabinet is the problem I guess. (its some noob company, was cheap, my father told the guy to use that one, and now I guess it doesn't provide good cooling)

The problems are strange. Would like you to run memtest86 and a hard drive error check and report back. Also a anti virus scan maybe? Yes this appears strange but do a scan.

You said you recently upgraded.
And there is definite heating problem.

I'm betting on improper heatsink installation. Did you do the upgrade yourself?

This might be a problem, remove cooler, re-apply TIM and reinstall cooler. Check temp and report back.

Temp are too much clean the dust and reappy tim paste on cpu...temp should not be more that 50 degree celcius without overclocking....
i too has same problem of restarting and dropping fps now after applying tim its fine....

I think CS 1.6 was minimized. that's why CPU usage was low otherwise it will be a bit higher.
Yes, I minimized it then checked.

No, it was assembled by the guy from whom I bought it. I didn't expect such problem for a professional.

I don't know how will that help. It must be a hardware problem.

I don't know what a TIM is, but I'll tell the guy to check all the cooling apparatus again.

Even professionals can make mistakes And most err by applying too much paste.
Here are some basic guidelines.
1) Too much is just as bad as too little paste.
2) The paste must be just a means of contact between the CPU and the heatsink. Do NOT apply too much thinking it will cool, It DOESN'T.
3) Once after applying paste, the cpu cooler has been placed on top of the CPU, DO NOT lift it up for anything. If you lift it up, clean both of them again and start applying paste from scratch.
4) Apply a thin, even layer covering the cpu fully, and if you wish a similar one on the base of the heatsink.maybe using an atm card or something flat like that to scrape off excess.
5) A good application is less than a mm in thickness. Yes, much much less than a millimetre.

Hope these will help you monitor your buddy doing the upgrade. ;)

Before all of that, check that your CPU fan is running okay...

Fan was alright.
Re-applied thermal paste.
Everything fine now.
Temperatures:
25-30 under normal.
40-45 under gameplay.

Huge FPS improvement. :)

Thanks all, u guys r awesome.:toast:
